Handbrake adjustment
2006 Z4M Roadster
---------------------- Hi guys, I went to get new rotors on my car (OEM), and the tech at my indy said that the driver side rear rotor was nearly impossible to take off because of a handbrake issue. Not exactly sure what was up since I dropped off the car and went to pick it up after the brake job was done. The tech mentioned that only the passenger side handbrake component was working and that it would be fine for the weekend and to come back (this week) for a full adjustment. Put the car into the shop yesterday and today when going to pick it up the tech said that the handbrake was adjusted but they could not get the cables to tighten. He said that for the Z4M there as no way to tighten the cables further and that the cables would need to be replaced (huge job) since they are stretched. I was under the impression that there was a auto tightening spring in our cars? Not sure. Any advice is greatly appreciated! FYI: for now the handbrake feels fine, the hold seems strong. It is still pulling up slightly higher than normal though. |

It's because previous owners have tightened the hand brake via the bolts under the hand brake lever instead of doing it right by adjusting at the brake shoes (more of a PITA). This causes the wire to stretch with time.

I doubt anything is stretched! Not sure your car is the same, but on mine there is a primary adjustment at the console (for which there is a special tool) and then the adjustment at the rotors.
