Tires

Hello...

I am going to need some advice on changing tires for my 03 Z4 3.0i Sport

I understand that the tire sizes are 18x8 front and 18x8.5 rear

My questions:

If i am going to use the car during winter (I live in Michigan), what would be a good all-season tire?

Am I able to keep the tires just in case a few months down the road I decide to change my wheels?

TIA

Rocky

Those are your rim sizes, not tire sizes. Your stock tire set up is 225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear.

All-season tires are useless in the winter with any bit of snow/ice (and terrible during the summer) on a RWD car like the Z4. You'll be better off having summer performance tires on your stock rims, and buy separate dedicated winter/snow tires & a cheap set of 17" rims. Having a separte set of wheels also makes wheel swapping so much easier/cheaper and can be done in your own garage, and you wouldn't need to worry about the tire shop scratching your rims when they mount and unmount the tires.

If your not an aggressive driver you may not notice the difference, but they will not have the grip that the stock tires had, but if they are non ruflats you will have a much smoother ride. I don't drive my cars in the snow, but got caught in a light dusting this winter, but was able to get the Z home without drama and the traction control (yellow) light on came on a few times

The previous time i got caught in the snow, I was met with an accident.

sigh... how much does it cost for me to change wheel (just the service charge and not the cost of wheels and tires).

thanks

Do you mean mounting the tires onto the rims? Or simply swapping a set of wheels (tires + rims)? Tire-mounting probably costs $80~$120 depending on your location. Wheel swapping/mounting costs about $30~40 in my area, but free labor if you DIY. If you've never swapped wheels yourself, don't let the idea overwhelm you. It's really easy and a 30 min (or less) job once you've done it a couple of times.

All you need are:
-Torque wrench + 17mm thin wall socket ($30 from tire-rack)
-power wrench/breaker bar ($8 from tire-rack)
-floor-jack ($25 from sears)

The thing is that I am living in a Studio Apartment right now... so its not very convenient to have spares laying around in my apartment. Is there another solution that not driving during the snowy seasons?

Most shops around here will do the seasonal swaps for free if you purchase the wheels and rubber from them. If not, expect to pay ~$20 per wheel if flipping rubber back and forth on your OE wheels or ~ $10 for wheel swaps. try to find a place that will store your winter setup for you for free or a nominal charge.

As far as Winter tires go on Z4's for Southern Michigan/Ontario Winters - I highly recommend Hankook Icebear W300's - If you decide to flip rubber on your OE wheels you can run 235/40/18's all around on the staggered setup, this allows you the option to rotate. As suggested by others, 17's on a Winter Alloy wheel are the way to go - 225/45/17 is what I ran on my ZHP.

Some shops will also store the out of season set as well.

...otherwise throw a table cloth over them & use them for end tables

I live in an apartment also and at one time I had 2 sets of wheels in my living room and literally used 1 set as my coffee table.
