Short Shift Kit Causing a Transmission to Fail?
Im currently working with a company that is going to rebuild my transmission. They claim that using a short shift kit can cause transmission failure. Im looking to purchase the Auto Solutions short shift kit after the transmission is repaired. Has anybody heard of this happening? Anybody unhappy with auto solutions?

Autosolutions SSK and RE Tranny mounts FTW!!
Even better would be those with Vibra-Technics motor mounts. Shifting nirvana!!

Go forth with confidence; all reports are that the AS SSK is the best on the market, period. |

The only thing I've heard along those lines was from an interview with Steve Dinan. Basically from what I recall it went something like this:
The reason for the lack of clutch stop, long throw shifter and CDV combo was to slow down the shifting and compensate for crappy drivers. Removing the CDV, adding a clutch bump stop and going with a short shift kit makes shifting more responsive to the driver's actual inputs. In this respect, there's more potential (if your ham fisted) to burn up a clutch quicker... but to toast an actual get box? No-way. |

Not when going from 1st to 2nd, but I have also trained myself to push the shifter to the left. With the VT and RE mounts there is a lot less movement between the engine/transmission and the the shift linkage when on the throttle. I think this helps cut down on 2nd gear grinds the most.
Also the VT mounts make the car more responsive to throttle changes since the motor is held in place better. I haven't had my car on the track, so I cannot comment on 3rd to 2nd gear denials.

3rd to 2nd isn't just a Z4M issue. My 95 E36 does the same thing. It was like running in someone you don't want to see but know very well last weekend at the track with the E36. (I pretty much use 3-4 only, but needed 2nd due to someone being in the wrong run group and slowing too much at one turn--needed but couldn't get--hello-- at least I wasn't too surprised.)
Does it in the street too when hot. I'm going to see if an x-brace and new transmission mounts cure it. |
