Tekarbon CF mirrors installed again.

This was one of my favorite mods on my original Z4M, and I finally got around to putting them on my second one. I was browsing Tekarbon's site the other day, and they just happened to have a set in stock so I jumped on it. Bought them Wednesday and they showed up on Saturday, awesome service! Anyway, I couldn't be happier with them. I think they really are a quality product and give a nice touch to the car. I highly recommend them!

Nick,
I have been looking to add a bit of CF to my car.
Can you see any original body colour on the mirrors with these installed?

Edit, these completely replace the OEM body colour mirror surrounds?

Hi there. Absolutely not, there is no OEM body color anywhere on the mirrors. Only CF is visible all the way around when installed. Be sure to look at the picture from inside my car, you can see it's all CF.

Yes, they completely replace the OEM mirror surrounds. I replaced both in about 40 minutes, 20 minutes per side. Hope this helps!

Good deal, you'll love 'em! No, no tape needed. These are complete replacement shrouds, you need to remove your old ones and replace them with these. Run a search for my name and my previous thread on these mirrors from 5-6 years ago. I have a pretty detailed write up on the install there. Good luck!

Very nice. They look a lot better than the ones I bought about four years ago (really crappy finish on the back CF edge by the mirrors). Glad Tekarbon is putting a little more effort into making these look perfect.

I had the same problem, glad to see they have improved.

You guys are right, I actually forgot about that on my first set years ago. The portion of the mirror you see while driving in the car (mirror side), is GREATLY improved. I knew something looked different while driving, but you just reminded me of the earlier issues the mirrors had. These are awesome though!

Super duper easy! Took me about 20 minutes per side. The only trick is knowing how to get the glass to pop out, but with a long narrow screwdriver it's a snap. Below, I've pasted my original instructions on the install from six years ago:

They were very easy to put on. The only tools I needed were a 10 torx screwdriver, and a flat headed screwdriver. You remove the black panel on the bottom of your mirrors first (the easiest way to do this is fold your mirrors up, put your window down, and kind of work through the door as if you were sitting inside the car), it's held on with a single 10 torx screw. Once that's out, just stick a flat head screwdriver in a crack and pop the panel right out.

Next, look up inside the mirror and you'll see this little notch. (please note, that some writeups have you tilt the mirror glass down, and try to get at another notch that way. This is a real pita, and I HIGHLY recommend going at the notch in the base of the mirror. That way, you can't scratch the paint or break any glass). Stick the flat headed screwdriver in the notch (at the base of the mirror), and push to the right. It should move about 1/4 inch or so, and you'll kinda hear it unlock. The glass can then be removed from the motor base, and there is a plug, along with two wires attached to it. Remove all of these, and place the mirror to the side for the time being.

Next, remove the window motor by removing the three, 10 torx screws. Be kinda careful with the bottom of the three, as each one of them in both mirrors of mine were rusted. Take your time backing them out, as it would suck if you broke one off in there. Pull those three screws, and the motor comes right out. Unplug it of course.

Next, there are four more 10 torx screws that are attached to the mirror cover itself. Carefully pull those out, and the only thing holding on the covers now are a pair of plastic clamps (I used the flat head screw driver again to pop up these plastic clamps). Kinda wiggle the cover a bit, and you can pop it right off.

Now, place the CF cover on, and do everything in reverse. When you get to the glass, just place it on the motor, and use your flat headed screw driver to push the notch back to the left. Once again, you'll hear it thunk and you're ready to go. It's all very easy, straight forward, and I was done in about 45 mins.

The only word of caution I have is to be careful tightening the screws back in. Everything in there is plastic, and it looks like it would be really easy to overtighten and crack something. I would just tighten until the screws are firm. I did it this way, and driving around today the mirrors were rock solid with no vibration.

They look great!
Nice to hear they have improved the finish quality
It would drive me crazy to see imperfections when looking at the mirrors from the inside of the car; From your photo, looks like they nailed it this time around.
