Exclamation Any Interest in a Catted or Resonated Section 1 Alternative to DKF & Euro Section 1?

All,

After installing the Custom Performance Innovations headers and loving their product (see here -> http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1048834), I noticed they offer this piece for the E46 M3:

Quote:
BMW E46 M3 Section 1 w/Magnaflow 400 Cell OBDII Compliant Cats

The CPI Euro section 1 with crossover pipe and California OBDII compliant Magnaflow 400 cell catalytic converters was designed for BMW E46 M3s with after market headers.

Seeing as I'm looking for a similar Section 1 to help with smog when the time comes (also to turn the SES light off) I've been in contact with CPI and they say they may be able to create this product for the Z4M as well. They've also got the option to replace the Cats with resonators or empty piping (similar to the DKF, though CPI is permanent). One thing I notice the CPI offers is a crossover pipe - none of the other parts on the market have this feature but the E46 M3 guys sure seem to love the CPI pipes.

My main point of this thread - is anyone interested? If so I'm thinking maybe we can put together a nice little GB for the product and possibly have it remain as a permanent option for the Z4M aftermarket.

Here's some info on the resonated version that can also be offered -> http://www.custom-performance.net/pr...t.asp?idpage=5

M3 guys love it because it kills the S54 rasp (heh, they call it "The Rasp Terminator"). Granted we have dual cats in our S1 but I still see this option as being sought after considering the price the M3 units sell for ($459 shipped).

Since I'm local, I emailed Jack to see if he would be interested in doing some dyno sessions with my ESS Z4M. It's got a stock exhaust now, but the seller is including Euro headers with the sale. I'd like to see a comparison between stock, Euro, and CPI headers + section 1 to see exactly what we're getting for our money.

I think the E46 M3 only has one cat in its section 1, so I'm not sure if those guys can relocate the O2 sensors like we can in the Z4M. Even if they can, with half the cylinders having a straight pipe to the muffler (no resonated X-pipe like we have), the M3 has rasp issues. We have dual cats in the section 1 and a resonator in the X-pipe, so the need to remove rasp isn't the same for us.

Our motivation boils down to power and ease of secondary O2 sensor install (no welding bungs). If the CPI section 1 made a consistent 5 horsepower over stock, the it would be worth it IMHO.

It doesn't change your points but the single guy on their section 1 is a sorry resonator. Not a cat.

They have resonators only, cats only, straight pipes, or resonators+cats

IMO if it makes a couple ponies over stock & has the integrated o2 bungs, that's a huge slam dunk! Perfect solution to anyone with Euro or aftermarket headers that wants to retain OBDII compliance. I know the integrated o2 is no problem (they offer it on their E46 section 1), so we'll see about power.

Also for those who don't want cats in their section 1, I could see this being a solid option as well while keeping noise volume down. I imagine headers + CPI section resonated + x-pipe + axleback would sound great, without rasp.

Let us know how it goes, Jack's a great guy!

I just meant the North American OEM E46M3 setup.

Heck I would install this on my 3.0si and make it work just so I can run catless headers.

I have often thought why us non M guys M54 or N52 can't run the M aftermarket bits.
The header collector flanges must be fairly close to the same location.

I just need the cats with bungs installed. I can chop off the other end and weld it into the existing piping. I'm just not sure if the flange sizes are similar.

I would be interested in buying them (expecting similar pricing to M3 version).

Certainly worth the effort of a bit of fab if we can go catless headers ,pass emissions and keep the SES away.

Not really enough interest, I don't think. Z4M aftermarket is tough these days it seems, especially for developing new parts.

With some CA smog sniffer read-out data to show the actual numbers, too

Seems we *should* finally have a solid solution for DKF owners who want to be able to pass smog & not set of the SES light

Status Gruppe has these identical s-pipes. I contacted them a while ago and they said it won't pass smog with catless headers. Even though it says "400 Cell CA OBD2 compliant Cats" as one of the options. Weird.
