Newbie: Track day Z4M to be SUPER CHARGED
Hi there guys,
Quick intro, being a true petrol head I've been very blessed to own some really cool cars including a CSL, 2x EVO IX, turbo charged lotus 7 with a sequential gbox. Before you think this dude is loaded I only owned one of these at a time Anyways after the a stint in a 135i DCT I drove a Z4M for the first time in years, I'd almost bought a Z in 2008 but a CSL came around so it was only in late 2013 that I found a black Z4M. The plan was always to build a track day toy and the saga began... Mod list thus far: TC KLINE 2way coil overs and camber plates 18x9.5j koya rims with bridgestone 265 semi's all round POWERBRAKE BBK front and rear, ENDLESS brake fluid and pads CUSTOM full race exhaust, no cats 4.11 diff ratio with stock LSD Stripped interior with AC delete Roll cage 2x Cobra seats MOMO wheel Copy of 1995 super touring car rear wing Front splitter, MDF as its still a prototype Motor and tune are stock The original plan was to do a CSL airbox and schrick 288/280 cams with a alpha N tune. Problem is I live at about 4500-5000ft above sea so we struggle with bhp. Having owned a few TURBO cars I have always wanted to do the SC thing but with our current USD exchange rate a kit from the US wasn't viable. That was until I found bits and pieces from a ESS kit that was on e46 M3 that the owner decided to park into a hedge. It's the V3 SC and being keen on the DIY thing I decided to take the plunge and bought the left overs. This is what I have thus far: V3 SC ESS intake ESS bracket Intercooler 600x300x75mm, I'm gonna do my own air to air set up OE Oil cooler removed and 2x coolers fitted in brake duct area. 440cc bosch injectors ex Porsche 996 turbo Being a track day car I removed the AC and when the AC compressor came out I noticed a nice space where I'm gonna try squeeze the SC in. I know this is very ambitious but if it works the pros will be awesome. The main reasons to try put the SC in that position is shorter boost pipes and I also want to run the blower on its own cogged/toothed belt to eliminate belt slip and broken/jumped belts. Basically the cogged belt will run in place of the OE AC belt so space is not an issue. The bracket and drive pulleys with tensioner are gonna take some time but I'm positive it will be a great solution in the end. With all the above you probably thinking this dude is CRAZY and the SC relocation is gonna be a huge pain in the a$$.... But honestly my biggest concern is the TUNE. So after the long post what I'm looking for is some advice and/or assistance with regards a reliable TUNE solution. All advice will be greatly appreciated. I'll try post some pics Cheers... |

For the bracket, make sure you include an additional pulley to increase the belt wrap of the supercharger pulley. While a cogged belt is an interesting idea, I don't know if anyone has done it on a Z4.
Maybe you could source a VF bracket?

A few more pics of the cooler upgrade.
Interestingly I saw the oil temps come down from 130deg to 115-120deg but I must concede the oil cooler change also saw a swop from the Castrol TWS 10w60 to Motul 300v 15w50 |

S/C placement isn't a good idea, mount it on the cold side! it will already got very hot on the other side of the engine bay let alone next to a whopping great heat source of the manifold.

Coolers are 19 row with -10 fittings.
I used the stock brake duct holder frame and then welded some flat ali plate to the coolers for mounting. A bit crude but it works and looks neat. I opted to weld the -10 fittings to the oil filter housing to minimize the flow restriction. Also the cost of importing the -10 fitting adaptor kits vs welding 2 locally sourced fittings didn't make sense. Again a bit crude but it does the job. |

Hi guys,
So as per my original post any comments or solutions for a tune? I wonder if ESS would sell me a tune? Is there anyone else out there who can/would sell me a tune file? Thanks |

I might try the ESS bracket and set up to start with.
What else does the bracket come with? Looks like I'll need some spacers... Unfortunately I only got the bracket with one idler pulley. Where could I find a installation manual for the ESS KIT. Hehehehe... I know pushing my luck do be gentle on the replies please |

The ESS bracket limits your power due to belt slip. VF or similar is the way to go.
Or go with an ASA supercharger and never worry about slip, as it has probably 3x the wrap of a Vortech.

Ok so it's been pretty crazy at work so no time to work on the Z.
After much consideration it looks like we gonna start with the ESS bracket but as always we gonna do it slightly different... To prevent slip I want to try lock the stock belt tensioner and then tension by using an adjustable tensioner. Not sure if this has been done before but hopefully I can minimize slip for now. With regards the plumbing I must admitt it's not gonna be easy unless u have the "custom" silicone bends etc than come with the kit. Also my cooler outlets are higher than the original kit so that also changes things slight. With that all being said I was really struggling to get all the plumbing lined up and past the power steering pump and roll bar. The post intercooler to intake wasn't to bad but the SC out and route into the cooler was a pain leading me to think OUT THE BOX. The below pics are not for the fainted hearted. Considering my car is pretty much never ever going back to stock I decided to run the SC out into the wheel arch and then down to the cooler. I'm gonna need to reduce steering lock but I can still get a full 360 deg on the steering wheel and clear the boost pipe which is plenty for the track. Pics of the mock up... Still a way to go tho... |

Evolve tune
Time for quick update
So as it turns out an old customer of mine son just took on the EVOLVE agency in South Africa. I bought the EVOLVE tool and did the necessary to get my stock map to Imran. Process was relatively easy only issue being stupid windows 8. I got a stage 2 map for my car and uploaded it without a glitch. We had an event this weekend at Kyalami were I entered the car into the local BMW club race series instead of the time trials. Anyways the car ran GREAT and even though I haven't dyno'd it to check bhp gains I must compliment EVOLVE the tune was superb and I would DEFINATELY recommend them. Big thanks to Imran at EVOLVE UK. |
