New starter not working
Hey guys - have a question .
Just replaced my starter with a brand new Bosch starter. It worked great. Now a week later I drive to my girlfriends and shut the Z off and later that night nothing again. I have power everything works but the starter . I'm wondering if the battery could just weak enough not to start it ? Or what would you think ? Key triggers the locks and alarms . Lost Thanks any help would be appreciated Andy |

Have a load test done on the battery to find if it's the culprit. A number of auto parts stores will test for free...or get yourself a load tester....

Maybe a flaky clutch switch? Code it out. If that doesn't work, use a volt meter to determine if voltage is making it the starter when you turn the key, it not, the problem is upstream from the starter.

Adjust your clutch stop down. If it too high it prevents the clutch being depressed enough which prevents a start.

I would think a bad starter, just because it worked great at 1st unfortunately doesn't mean anything. Might be a relay or solenoid on the starter. Did a connection on the start come loose?

My money is on the clutch stop also. They can be temperamental to temp changes if set too high.
Actually experienced this myself recently.

So it was crazy - my power locks don't want to disengage the doors (think I'll have to open them up and clean years of build up out) but I used the key in the pouring rain that evening.
Something didn't feel right when I turned it. After checking all the fuses in the lower two rows ( just had a fuse tester and it was difficult to get to the upper ones) I had a friend tell me to check the immobilizer fuse- I had checked the low amperage ones but tried it again on a better day on the upper 40a ones - well that was it it had blown the 40a immobilizer fuse . Replaced it and I've been good to go . Thanks for the suggestions . |

IGNITION SWITCH. Easily replaced - just remove the cover from the bottom of the steering column and the switch is right there.

That looks like the correct part. I bought mine at the local AutoZone (that switch is common to LOTS of BMW's and pretty easy to find in stock).
I'm sometimes a little leary of buying car components off of Ebay but from the photo, that one at least has the correct BMW part number on the side of the switch. Good luck!
