I loved the sound of RPI's but when I see them in pictures it honestly just looks like two pipes that come back out of the exhaust in place of the muffler. I mean, I know there's more to it than that but it seems as if you could get similar sound from just a local exhaust shop welding pipes for you.

My question was that if I get the muffler cut and I have just pipes in place of them. What am I looking at as far as price is concerned? There's a reputable exhaust shop near where I live and they said it would cost anywhere from $150-$200.

Is this reasonable?

Or should I stop being a cheap ass and just get RPI's?

There's a thread on here somewhere where they cut open the stock cans and took the guts out, then welded them back up.
I think that gets you the low end of straight pipes, but cuts down on some of the high end rasp.

I have driven my car without mufflers for a few miles for shits and giggles and you will for sure get stopped/ticketed/impounded in no time.

If you just removed the mufflers and didnt add the pipe afterwards yes you would get ticketed. I've had a muffler delete before and it was NOT as loud as many other exhausts. It is a cheap and effective way to make a better sound and the engines sound great when they are less restricted. You will not get ticketed for sound. They are nowhere near that loud.
