After hearing that clip, I'm extremely interested in getting this set up, but I have two questions.... Do you think this would void the warranty and secondly would the parts be the same as well as the setup for the coupe ?

Reading through the various threads, it appears that removal of the secondary cats makes no difference at the tail pipe and probably cleans up the exhaust gas flow somewhat. For those who can, I think it's a great mod for sound quality with the added benefits of low cost and a little weight savings.

wow the 3.0si responds VERY well to an exhaust mod...that sounds clean!
i actually spoke with Nelson at mighty muffler a month or so ago about custom fabbing my section 1. i'm not ready yet because i'm not sure what resonators to go with.

OK, very confused...is what was removed a cat or just resonators? Or, is there even a difference?
I would like this setup but I am told that if I remove cats in Ontario that its a potential $20k fine (that's from a reputable muffler shop). If its just resonators, then this should not have anything to do with emissions system, correct? |

The intriguing aspect is that there are no sensors associated with these which would suggest that they are resonators. The 3.0Si differs from the M in exhaust design so the M folks can't really help us here. What needs to be done is for someone who has removed them to look inside, or preferably to section one and report to the forum. Pics would be great! Removal of these with the install of a larger volume resonator/muffler in the tunnel is a great mod, it’s clean, simple, inexpensive, and produces the desired increase in volume without resonance. So I ask again: Has anyone removed these and looked inside? A grateful forum awaits!

Those "resonators" are cats. There's a section of cats in the headers, and a section that you see in the OP's first post before the axle-back section. No sensors connect pre or post "secondary" cat section on other BMWs (or the M) for that matter.
See Realoem. Here's a link. Now whether the car could pass a tailpipe smog check without the "secondary" cats is another question. As for an OBDII readiness check, since there are no O2 sensors around the "secondary" cats, it's not going to affect that. The only issue would be passing a visual test. In the US in CA, the tailpipe test is to be replaced in 2013 by an ODBII readiness check, so the rules have changed. Things changed with AB229, section 44012. Aside from the issues with the visual check, removing these may not pose the problem they would have at one time since this section isn't monitored by the ECU. |

Magnaflow 12468 won't work on 2006 z4 3.0si
Guys,
Have any of you attempted this setup on a 2006 z4 3.0si? I bought this muffler (Magnaflow 12468) and went to my exhaust shop, they told me there is not room for it to fit. In the photos of this post is shows much more room. I don't understand how that is possible, unless between a 2007 and 2006 they changed the under body of the car. Any clue? |

I brought the pics at the beginning of this post, and even after removing the secondary cats / resonators they said the muffler would not fit. They showed it to me in the air and I tend to agree. The width of the magnaflow 12468 is 8 inches, it looks like the opening is right at 8 inches. So, it might fit but there would be all kinds of noise / rubbing. Something does not add up. Thinking the part number on this original post was wrong.

The problem with the 12468 appears to be a problem of width (8 inches) not length, the muffler you mention is even wider at 9 inches. I know you say it is trapezoid in shape, but it looks even like a tougher fit. Those that used the 12468 must have a different year car than mine with less room for the width?
