Yes, very glad to hear all is well.
Made me queasy enough to buy a ball valve.

I looked at these a few years back and decided that after install it would sit below the access panel opening and would be unprotected from road debris.

Installed the Fumoto valve last weekend.
Sits just sub-flush of the reinforcement plate.
Could sorta get the plastic cover back on, but hits the valve and wouldn't lock.
Left the cover off since it would have ejected as soon as the engine wiggled.
I'm in a benign environment, so I'll take my chances with it being exposed rather than take my chances stripping the drain in the future.

I had the same issues with mine when I got my S2 with a warning that the pan was slightly cross threaded. 2 oil changes later the pan finally gave out. I went with the Time Sert Solution. Will probably just got a top side oil extractor as well to avoid this going forward. I guess thats what we get for having an aluminum oil pan. Costed me about 350 from an indy shop.

If the fit is that close, do you think with a little bit of heat that you could contour the cover to fit?

That would put the lock tabs at an unfavorable angle.
Given the weather here, it may get slightly dusty between changes, little more.
If I needed the cover, I would probably cut the middle out of it and glue on something slightly domed.
