Inspection 1 @ 20K miles?

I am looking at a used M Roadster. The paperwork they provided shows Inspection 1 @ 20k miles. Is that correct? I was under the impression that was the time Inspection 2 should be done. It has 43k miles right now.

Thanks.

Inspections are based on fuel consumption and not directly on mileage. Depending on the fuel economy of the previous driver he may have hit the "25K" service around 20k and or just did it early to check up on the car if it had other misc problems. The second service is budgeted for 50k or so but that's with "perfect" fuel economy. Mine will hit around 44-44.5 when it needs it's service 2.

I bought mine with 39k miles and was in the exact same situation.
"Congrats on the new car, now shell out bucks for inspection."
Was probably a factor in the previous owner's decision to sell.

Had I only know then what I know now, mostly from reading this forum, I could have saved big bucks.
Now I "self inspect".

So, on average, at what mileage does the dreaded Inspection 2 hit? I don't want to buy a car and have that hit me a month later. Is there a way to tell how many miles are left before it's due?

Turn the keys in the ignition. It'll tell you when the next service is due. If it says "oil service" and flashes a number, add that number to 12,000 miles and it's safe to expect THAT to be the next inspection, give or take a few thousand miles based on how quickly you burn through gas.

Since my car sees some track time, my inspection 1 came at 19,000 miles and my inspection 2 came at 34,000 miles. My old carpool buddy's E46 M3, on the other hand, is at 36,000 miles and won't be expecting inspection 2 at least until 45,000.

As they say. Your mileage, may vary.

IMHO I would just have inspection 2 done right away since in most cases the dealer has performed the valve inspection and probably just took off the valve cover and replaced the gasket without really checking the valve clearances and shimming the ones that were off. Also, I would make sure to get it done at a good indy shope if available around you.

I am in the philly area and will be taking mine to Bimmerworks to get Insp 2 done after this winter. I am at 40 K and the obc still says about 7k until it is required. Again, I didn't own this car new so am skeptical of how inspection1 was performed to begin with.

My .02

Good advice, I will probably do the same thing. I have a great shop about 15 miles from me. Btw, my wife's from Doylestown.
