So I've ordered the Motorsports bolts and about to order the Nord-Locks. They have two sizes for M8 bolts, outer diameter .53" or outer diameter .65".

Which should I order?

What is the engineering/reason behind using .53" Nord-Locks and not the .65" Nord-Locks when the BMW (standard) washers are .65"?

Ron, I defer to your knowledge and experience but I don't really get what you are saying (I didn't measure anything, just going off of web site info). From McMaster-Carr it seems there are only two sizes of Nord-Lock washers for M8 bolts. Below is a screen grab filtered for their M8 offering.

It seems I should get their .65" outer diameter Nord-Locks, these would be closest to the BMW size washers, and that the Zinc coated Nord-Locks should fit the bill just fine (no need to spend more for the stainless). Would you agree?

If I'm missing something, please help me out. I truly appreciate your wisdom.

I've ordered nordlocks and bolts through fastenal. I think my bag of nordlocks will come with 25 pairs. More than i need but minimum quantity. I went for the oversized. If you're interested in buying them from me, you could paypal me and I'll toss them into an envelope for you. I am told they will be in this tues or wed.

Just did the passenger side today on my '06 with 38,000km. The upper bolt on the front mount was halfway out :S

Replaced all 4 with equivalent McMaster-Carr bolts + Nord-locks. I couldn't figure out how to get to the driver's side bolts from under the car, so that'll be for another night...

Just wanted to consolidate the most useful DIY info sources in one place for everyone's future reference:

What size did you end up ordering?

You need to remove the airbox to get to the front bolts(from the top) on the drivers side.

Actual current McMaster part numbers, your welcome.

You'll have to get them from McMaster, but probably more of them than you want, but hey, you can never have too much left over hardware.
You need 6 M8x25 and 2 M8x35 (where the Vanos oil accumulator bracket is attached).

Yea, you're going to get a heck of a lot more of them than you need, but they're dirt cheap.
M8x25 = 90854A167 (Sack of 25)
M8x35 = 90854A172 (Sack of 25)
Nord-Locks = 91812A430 (5 per pack, so get 2 packs.)
