BMW continues this horrible trend of "plastic" design with large panel gaps and overall cartoonish feature elements. BMW seems to get away with it in the 3 and 4 series because of the market they are in.
I can't imagine this will work too well in the 8 series segment, at least here in the USA. Unless it has some outstanding lease rates. More then likely BMW only cares about selling it in Asian markets. The new a5 and Lexus LC have a much more professional and tight design which seems strange as the 8 series nomenclature suggests this should be at a higher level then those. Ferrari seems to be the only company who has figured out how to mix swooping design with crisp lines and panels. This car is simply too reminiscent of fisher price rather than matchbox.

Hmm... Porsche seems to make concept cars that are virtually the production version and I never hear anyone say their concepts or production cars are boring. Also, the PRODUCTION version Aston Martin DB11 has more of a shark nose closer to the look of the 8 series concept, compared to what this 8 series production seems to have and they seemed to have designed it with the same regulations all the other cars have to design with.

Agreed -- there's something "unresolved" about the back end. That huge chunk of open space for plates is weird. Maybe it's just the angle of the photo.

iPads didn't exist until 2010, but I agree. I vacillate between loving and hating the display in my G12 7-Series. Sometimes I think it's cool that it's propped up front-and-center -- primarily when I'm behind the wheel, and other times (when, for example, approaching the car from the front and looking into the car through the windshield) I think it's a bit of an eye-sore.

Same here, I was hoping the 8 Series would keep me with the brand. Nope. Missing my M5, but I have a MB GTR on the way.

One thing I noticed when looking back at the rear end photo was how distorted the perspectives are. Ie. the column to the right has some major deflection going on, same with the vertical lines towards the front of the car making the rear bumper of the car look pinched almost cartoonish.

I REALLY hope thats not what it looks like. Hard to tell and a weird angle, but man the prototype was amazing!! This is disappointing.

You're right, but the Potato already reveals that the production version is not the prototype adjusted for production and safety regulations, but a totally different concept all together. The proto showed timeless beauty, stood on his own in the line-up, radiated muscle and elegance. The Potato shots already indicates it's rather a 2 doors 5 series with some adjustments. Probably still desirable enough to many, but most certainly not jaw dropping like the proto made me expect. |

I think that's my biggest gripe - it's just not inspiring. The concept was pretty bold. This? Not so much...
