Rattle, common problem?

hey, when my top is up there is a rattle directly behind the middle everytime i hit a bump that sounds like a piece of plastic is loose. Is this a common problem or just something I cant help? Ive never owned a vert before so I have no clue if something is wrong or not.

Not all roadsters are rattle traps. Power top, manual top. Something in the storage boxes between the seats?

Garage List
if it makes you feel any better, i own a coupe and i get dash rattle. and its happened with every sports car or modded car (aftermarket suspension) i've owned. starts out fine but after enough bumps on a harsh ride, something's bound to give.

mine goes away for the most part when i put the navi screen down. going to have the dealer check it out soon.

Your best friend will be a roll of felt tape...

Dismantle everything, tape it up so its nice and snug, and that should take care of most of the rattles.

+1. So true.

I've spent 50~60 hours taking out my Z4M's entire interior (except dash board) TWICE and going after literally every possible rattle source. My interior's now finally 99% rattle free and I couldn't be happier. Also, the OEM strut brace helps tighting up the roadster's chassis and made a noticible difference decreasing the rattles.

I've had 3 Z4's, and they all rattled badly. My '03 2.5i with 16" wheels rattled the least.

jgorman13,
Had my 08 Z4 for about 2 months. So far it's been mostly top down driving, but like you note, an occasional rattle when top up. Haven't figured it out yet -- not evident on every bump I hit. Was gonna have the dealer take a look (or is that a listen).

Sounds like you'll get to a dealer before me. Let us know what results.

I had this problem

I brought my 06 Z4 to the dealership today because the rattle has been bothering me since I picked up this pre-owned vehicle last week. Every little bump including running over those little light reflector in between lanes would cause a sound like something loose was rattling around.

I was told the problem was in the convertable top frame and it needed an adjustment. I pick it up tomorrow so it should be much quieter.

Sounds like the rattle I'm hearing too. It's definitely behind me, and seems to emanate from the roof rather than the trunk or centre console.

jgorman13, be sure to report back.
