I just got this knob in my hand. if I'm going to switch the base, do I still have to separate the m5 knob and the boot?

If I separate them, do I have to break the white plastic ring inside the boot? reason being easier to change knob in the future; however, would the new m5 boot stay put without the plastic ring inside?

thanks and will try to attack this tonight.

I left the knob attached to the boot.

I have no idea if the boot will stay without the plastic ring since I left the ring intact.

I just installed this and took it for a drive. Wow. Much better weight and this is what I've been looking for. A tad taller and heavier than the ZHP I had. Since I have the AS SSK, ZHP is a bit too short, OE is weightless, I have been on the hunt for a perfect shift knob.

Since I change my shift knob, daily vs track, I have to break the knob/boot combo. I tried my best to keep the white boot ring intact. The trick is to cut enough of a slit for the wires to be able to edge it out instead of breaking the top boot ring. So M5 boot is in and I can just pull it to change at my hearts desire.

Now, I have the M5 knob for daily and a taller metal knob for the track (don't care about too hot/cold since I wear gloves for track)

For those who cares, ZHP weights 152 grams and the M5 weights 169 grams.
