Blinkers on dash don't work, KBUS or LCM error?

I'm encountering a curious issue. Externally my lights and blinkers work, but on the dash they do not blink or click. My car continues to beep for 30 minutes after leaving the car, and will not lock via remote. The dash backlight stays on and dim as if the headlights are on, and turning on highbeams shows no light on the dash.

My ODB2 to phone reader gives me 4 errors:

K Bus short
Ignition on but ignition off
Temperature sensor short
Light Module EEPROM error

This is an 03 bmw z4 3.0i

How should I attack this problem?

About maybe 3 or 4 of us in this forum are experiencing this problem, including Dbarton. We haven’t figured it out. My next move is to replace the ignition switch, haven’t gotten around to even ordering it. I deleted the codes and my car seems to “forget” about these symptoms for a few weeks before they come back. Could be the ignition switch, the key itself, the clockspring, a module, SRS, there’s a lot of different possibilities here. Typically when I experience the issue you’re having is when the airbag light comes on in the dashboard. One of the codes I got was 87: KOMBI K bus and BE KOMBI data filing difference to central light module

Interesting, I'll try clearing codes in the morning. My passenger airbag light's been on since I bought it a year ago, though I heard it's a common problem with the sensor dying and nothing to worry about.

A few posts with the same symptoms suggested replacing the LCM would remedy our problems, though they were e46/e36 related.

This isn't really an issue I can live with, the beeping is constant and drawn out.

I feel you. It’s the most annoying thing I’ve ever dealt with in the Z4. I’ve even considered selling it. Keep us posted!

The airbag light is usually the passenger seat sensor mat.
There was a recall on the mat that was good for 12 years from manufacture date.
I had mine replaced under that recall.
I have some of the same issues you and Ross have, I recieved my code reader today so this weekend I will attempt to diagnose my issues and report back.

Clearing the codes via My Carly ODB2 to phone and a standard OBD2 code reader fixed the constant beeping, but everything else remains. Still no dash feedback in the lights department, and the car refuses to lock remotely.

I received advice that I should systematically unplug systems from the KBUS one by one, and if removing one remedies my problems, it is likely that item sending corrupt data to the kbus, hanging everything up.

As of now, I have the airbag occupancy sensor light, a low voltage headlight light(though I just replaced, seems to be a loose connection), and a non-working temperature sensor. Maybe there's a chance one of these is freaking out the KBUS up the line. Though, all this seems to be LCM related. I have the Spyder Angel Eyes headlights as well, so maybe I have bad wiring somewhere.

I should note that none of my errors come up on a traditional ODB2 code reader, I am using a BMW specific reader called Carly to pick up these errors.

Using the Foxwell reader myself
By all accounts a very capable reader. We shall see.

Is your radio also not working, as in no sound?

My radio works, though it's intermittently died a few times over the past year, only to come back after a night of resting. I have found water in the battery compartment(I've since cleaned the drainage holes) and assumed it was probably water damage.

In fact, the car actually has an e46 amp next to the battery. So I guess the previous one was also taken out by water.

Has anyone tried this guide? https://www.bmwgm5.com/K-Bus_Troubleshooting.htm

Clearing all present codes in all modules, resetting SAS etc as well as unplugging and reconnecting the LMZ has the signals back on the dash and radio working as of today.
We shall see how things go.

The Foxwell NT510 is a very capable reader for those of us who are computer challenged.... IMO

Turned off the car while dropping a friend off only to have my car refuse to start(cranked fine, just no start).

I turned off the lights, radio, ac, manually locked the car(because remote lock doesnt work due to this k bus issue) and let it sit for a few minutes. Got back in and it started within 1 crank.

dbarton, has your car been working fine since your last post? Did you do everything through your reader?

I have not driven my car since restting all codes present.
Ross has had similar ongoing issues and I believe a new ignition switch may have been the last piece of the puzzle for him.

Edit
Yes I reset everything through the reader

As dbarton stated, I have had the same issues as you Disori due to the K bus (What we believe at this point). As of recently, inserting the key in ignition and rotating it to start position would do nothing, starter wouldn't crank the car, it wouldn't even click (i just replaced the starter about 2 months ago or less) so I know that wasn't the issue. I then remembered that i swapped the ignition switch about a year or so ago because my car wouldn't start at that point. I bought a used switch at the time. As of then, K bus issues began. This started happening more often for a whole month to the point where i had to move the key back and forth until it finally started the car. Typically, all the lights would come on in dash as IF the car would start but no luck. I replaced my ignition switch with a NEW one this past weekend and it seems to have fixed the no start issue. As for the K buss issues, it's still an ongoing issue but not quite as often as i had them before. I'd say try swapping the ignition switch; It may or may not resolve the K bus symptoms but it could fix your start issues for less than $100 and 10 minutes of your time.

Interesting. I just put in a new ignition switch and it solved nothing. My beeping isn't ever present, but I haven't heard the sound of my turn signals in ages now. I miss them. I sometimes leave my turn signals on to my embarrassment.

I pulled out my glove box panel but was kind of at a loss as to how to get to the X10016 block. You said it's behind the dash? Is it not near the glove box.?

It appears our X10116 blocks are a little differently placed. Or maybe I'm looking at the picture wrong. Either way, I can't for the life of me get the block out so I can access the top to remove the plugs. Any tips?

I'm afraid to simply just pull on the wires, yet I can't get this plastic block to remove from the wall. I can't get my pliers easily on top either.

This picture doesn't show depth very well but the back of the block is completely wedged into the wall. Is there a clip to squeeze back there?

Same place

Reach your fingers above the pink blocks and feel around for a tab.
Pull or push that tab towards or away from you(can't remember which way) and push up on the whole block. It will slide out of bracket.

Was it hard to do? Mines not budging at all. It's in such an awkward position too.

Tab isn't moving that much but it will pull towards me a bit. Pushing up on the box has lots of resistance.

Try pushing up one side at a time while pushing/pulling the tab.
It does resist. Give it a slap upwards with the palm of your hand, it will pop out.

Not to be sour or anything, ahh well I am. Why is this entire process so difficult? Reaching in I have to be chest up, legs out the door, with my lower back being speared by the doorsill.

Anyway, I finally got the block off, I having the shorting block exposed, but bending the tabs didn't make removal any easier, they're stuck in place. My first attempt on the first wire didn't go so well, and the little tabs broke off. Still not coming off the bar though
