Rip Off BMW parts in Canada

I'm sure its a common story but parts here are ridiculously overpriced.

I bumped my rear console door sideways the other day and snapped one of the little hinges (with the tiny screw) and when I went to try and fix it, realized the little guy was broken in half...not fixable even with epoxy.

I found the part on realoem.com and at bmwofatlanta for $2.21. I called my dealership here and they quoted me $11 and change. When I told him how much they were in the US, he dropped the price to $9 something....still 4x the price. I also broke the tab that turns the console interior light off from the flap/door and was just going to glue it back on (and beef it up) but thought I would look at replacing it...$83 in the US, $150 here.

Robbery!

I went to the states to get gaskets and shim kit so I can do my valve adjustment. On the gaskets alone I end up saving over $100. That is with a good discount from the local dealership applied. Not even going to mention cost savings on shim kit!

I use www.getbmwparts.com. Talk to Jason most of the time. It is a BMW dealership in the states. Ship it to a UPS store at lewiston and go pick it up. Even if you pay duty and cost of trip saves you money.

I have used www.autopartsway.ca and www.bimmerspecialist.ca for some OEM parts in the past. They ship via Canada so you don't pay duty. They are also usually cheaper than local as well.

It definitely sucks to buy parts here.

Yeah, I bought a lot of stuff from getbmwparts.com in April. I had to drive to Buffalo on a sunday anyway and found a UPS outlet there that is open Sundays, very close to the Peace Bridge so used it. I've done the same for other US ordered items when I head to Port Huron...there is a drop ship place there that charges $5 a package to accept it. Good deal.

I would have used them for this but it was really only a $20 order. Not worth the gas getting down to Buffalo or Lewiston this time. That said, I am heading to Port Huron August long weekend and have my eyes on a set of Michelin PSSs from Tire Rack for under a grand...with the new duty free limits for 48 hours....!!!

Heck, we drive to Niagara, US to do grocery shopping every two months or so...we save hundreds each time and its about a 90 minute drive. Love the Nexus card!!

I have used Bimmerspecialist a couple of times. They are really good. I bought some bearings a couple of weeks ago. Local BMW dealer wanted over $800 for all the parts. Bimmerspecialist was $346 shipped taxes and duty in.

If you follow through the Tirerack order they give you a firm quote including customs clearance.
.....no surprises from UPS at the door.

I bought my Continental DWS in the US from Discount Tire and carried them home duty free...$800 limit per person now after 48 hours so 2 receipts for the wife and I easily covered the purchase and left room for more shopping. I had them installed locally and then had an alignment done....then I sold the run flats locally for half of what I paid for the new tires. Well worth the trip.

I need brakes for my car all around. Local bmw: $9XX bmwmercedesparts.com: $460

They offer similar pricing to getbmwparts, generally the former is cheaper.

I use Turner for all my OEM parts now (outstanding Customer Service), they ship using USPS - no duty and hit and miss on HST. In addition I have a friend at a local Dealership that can get me wholesale or jobber price on things not worth shipping like fluids. Tires are worth the trip across the border if you have an installer - Tirerack has preferred installers everywhere and you can ship them the tires. For more expensive tires it's still worth going across and picking up. For Non OE I use a number of suppliers; again predicated on USPS as shipping method; Turner, Zeckhausen, EAS, Rogue Engineering etc.

Services like kinek and freeportforwarding allow you to go across the border to pick up parts. Just pay duty (if applicable) and taxes if you've been there less than 48hrs.

I am likely to pick up a set of PSSs on the long weekend when I am in Michigan. TireRack had a quote of less than a grand...half what I was quoted here.

It's not just BMW...I needed a hatch release for my Acura MDX. Locally I was quoted over $300 with tax. I had one shipped to my home from an Arizona dealer for just over a hundred. The insane thing is the Acura part is manufactured in Southern Ontario.

Yeah, Honda stuff is pretty bad as well. I used to have an Odyssey and they wanted over $800 for fog lights here in Waterloo. Drove 90 minutes to Buffalo and got them for half of that.

Get over it - someone has to pay for all the social systems here...

If the increase was a tax cost that pays for health care I might buy that but this is a cost set by manufacturers as MRSP. An Acura MDX made in Toronto costs 30% more to purchase than the same vehicle int he USA. The Canadian government gets the identical revenue from the manufacturer in both cases. It's nothing more than price gouging by the manufacturers.

On top of the higher vehicle cost we also pay higher sales tax which does go to support our social programs.

The gouging is so blatant that some manufacturers won't allow their US dealers to sell to Canadians under threat of losing their franchise....all to protect the dealers with the higher priced vehicles in Canada.

When I talked to the parts guy about getting a part for 1/3 of the cost from the US dealer he told me I was getting it below his cost...his hands are tied by the manufacturer.

So much for free trade.

That's my rant for the day...this issue really pisses me off.

Top Motor

Just thought I would FYI you all on this one...

I think my top motor is gone. Just called the stealership and their quote was $1,000 for parts and $780 in labour (6 hours times $129).

I asked them what parts they were including...motor, hydraulic kit, cover(insulation) as it turns out. I looked up the exact parts on getbmwparts.com and it came out to less than $500. With a bottle of new fluid just in case the total comes out to $522. Consider that I am headed to Michigan next weekend and I can get the parts with no HST or duty...maybe $550 all in including shipping (probably less). The $1,000 here would wind up as $1,130 including taxes.

Gee, wonder where I will get the parts.

Do you have any experience with Business Tax and Employer employee contributions in Canada vs. the U.S.? Buy It.
