Alarm 07 MCoupe - BMW wants $1100 + $1100 install?
I have looked throught the posts and DIY's about the OEM alarm for the 07 M Coupe. I have it at BMW now and they just told me it would be $1100 for the alarm and another $1100 for the install. They said that the coupe version contains a replacement mirror, a center console replacement piece, along with the other standard alarm pieces.
They said that the mirror is replaced because even though the clown nose is there it will not function with the alarm. The center console replacement contains the motion sensor. They said with all of those parts to replace those other pieces it is a 4 to 5 hour job. Of course I told them no - has anyone heard of this? I am getting the details when I pick it up today and will let you all know the part numbers they quoted.

You sir are getting ripped off. There is DIY guide that we all used. Buy the alarm yourself from tisher for $40 shipped. The one with non motion took me about 45 minutes only because I had to figure out a way to get the car up since my normal jack wouldnt fit underneath. There is a DIY for the motion where you have to get into the center console where they Navigation system is. The car already comes pre wired for the alarm which is plug and play

WOW!!!!!
What a rip off. The install takes 30min tops. I did mine myself and it was plug & play.

Also, you shouldn't get the motion sensor in a coupe, that's part of the roadster alarm.
EDIT: Hdoan86, you beat me. |

Sounds like somebody is doing more than a little gouging. I purchased the full alarm kit for my roadster (2006), including the motion sensor, for about 250 dollars. Having interior motion detection on a couple makes no sense to me - and without it the alarm can be purchased considerably cheaper.
The kit I purchased included the hood sensor, the motion sensor for the interior, and the alarm siren - which has an integrated 'tilt' sensor. I also had to purchase a new 'oddments' tray for the console, as it apparently has different shielding for the motion sensor. I was also told I needed a couple of new plastic covers for the rear view mirror, but don't see where or why they would be required - and certainly have no need to replace the mirror assembly itself. The BMW installation instructions for the alarm with interior motion detector show 1.5 hours install time for a Z4 roadster like mine. For a Z4M coupe installation (without an interior motion detector), they show 1.25 hours - the siren module install is a little trickier on the M. Here's the OEM install instructions, courtesy of Ron Stygar: Z4 Alarm Install (no motion detection) |

sadly, it may be true. looking at realoem, diag 65_1291, there are 4 parts required for install...
1) alarm w/ install kit 2) center console oddments tray 3) alarm compatible rearview mirror assy 4) mirror covers (only needed if you don't have auto wipers) it appears as though the real issue with the mirror is an interior motion sensor, most likely in the form of a UV LED (i think, someone more smarter should maybe chime in on engineering stuffs here) in the clown nose, which is not present in cars that don't have the alarm from the factory.

The "with motion sensor" should only cost 320 from the dealer too...

Thanks for the feedback - no way I was going to pay that. I printed out the DIY install with the pricing from the DIY to take and show them they are way off. I suspect this is probably the first time they have ever looked at the alarm for the M Coupe as they are so rare and are just way off base. I already decided I am doing it myself.

Just adding to the collective "wow"...
I recently had the alarm installed in my M coupe by my indy; as noted above, $40ish for the alarm, approx. 45 min labor.

I have never heard of the mirror being replaced... anyone have more info? I know the instructions for the installation in the Roadster mention nothing about a mirror replacement...

First I've heard of it.
I may be miss-remembering, but wasn't there a production change with the mirrors? or, maybe it was different between coups & roadsters.

I had mine done at the BMW dealer and parts were like $200+ and labor was about $200 bucks.. Not too much. $2200 for the job would be way too much.

new info for you...
have your dealer run the last 7 of your VIN (or PM me and i'll do this). if your car has option code "S5GAA" you do NOT need the mirror.

Why even bother, regardless of price? When was the last time you heard of a car alarm deterring a theft? Professional thieves can disable one in seconds. The smash-and-grab junkie thief will be in and out of your car with whatever he can snag in 10 seconds, so again, the alarm does nothing.
Alarms are a waste of money, and just contribute to noise pollution. I say save your money. The best deterrent to theft of goods from your car is to just leave it unlocked and keep no valuables inside. |
