Alarms are a waste of money
Your are, of course, entitled to your opinion. Myself, I want to know when someone has broken in to my car. I may not catch them (though I'll certainly try), but the alarm will make myself and anyone else in the area aware of their presence. I can alert the police, move and secure my car if it's damaged, and attend to the problem when it happens instead of several hours later.

Whomever the crooks are - career thieves, kids, 'other' - it's made their presence known. If the immediate vicinity includes my house, garage, and family, all the better.

If it starts false alarming and annoying the neighbours, I'll get it fixed - but I consider it money well spent.

Thanks good info - talked to the parts dept today and the guy that did the research wasn't there. Apparently the part listings from BMW are sometimes wrong. Mine is an 07 built in 11.06 - the alarm system kit ending in 9944 appears to be correct but when they put my VIN into the system it doesn't match for that kit even though it says it's for cars built from 4.03 on.

I got the service rep in trouble because he mis quoted the install price - the whole thing was $1100 with labor. It was $547.25 for the kit same as v3.0si said - $552.75 for the install (still way too pricey IMO). I am calling the guy that did the research tomorrow for more details as I couldn't get the part numbers or the differences in the kits.

S5GAA is the option code for Alarm Prep (i.e. Alarm Wiring harness)....I believe all U.S. spec cars came with this wiring with the exception of a few 2005 models (my old 2005 car being one of them) which came without the wiring harness installed....it was just a handful of cars.

I like the alarm so I could set my lights/chirp on arm and NO lights/chirp on disarm. When armed the trunk button is DISABLED, which is worth it to me. I could live without the tilt sensor and motion sensor.

1) alarm w/ install kit
2) center console oddments tray
3) alarm compatible rearview mirror assy
4) mirror covers (only needed if you don't have auto wipers)

it appears as though the real issue with the mirror is an interior motion sensor, most likely in the form of a UV LED (i think, someone more smarter should maybe chime in on engineering stuffs here) in the clown nose, which is not present in cars that don't have the alarm from the factory.
The dealer sent me the parts list breakdown:

65-73-0-302-424 Installation Kit $47.89
51-46-7-073-533 Oddments $15.52
51-16-9-134-395 Rearview Mirr $483.84
51-16-7-062-264 Set Of Co $4.37

Exactly what you said - looks like the bulk of the price is in the mirror replacement which has the alarm frequency in it.

i'm pretty sure you're not going to need the mirror.

have your dealer print out the install intructions for you. when i had them do it here, there was no mention of the mirror (or its replacement) at all.
