Worst weekend possible.

So I finally changed my run-flat tires last week and put on dunlop sp sport signatures. wonderful tires, huge change. I figured, no big deal not having run flats and o spare, considering i have bmw roadside anyway.

This past saturday I took a trip to ithaca NY which is about 200 miles from the city and about a 4 hour drive on a good day. I got there, no problem. Went out for a couple of hours, and then got in the car for the second leg of my trip, which was to syracuse.

I didnt get more than a couple of block when things felt wrong. pulled over and there was a FLAT TIRE!!!!!!! Ironically this comes right after i got my run-flats off, and I did not have a spare tire. So im stranded in Ithaca. I call BMW roadside and they say that because the closest dealer is 30 miles away and their service center is closed until monday, they had to STORE my car until then. They would not tow me to the closest auto center which was 3 miles away b/c of company policy. so my fail-safe failed.

After calling a tow truck, i got the car to sears auto center, the only place open and they told me that when the new tires were put on, the valve stems werent tightened properly and the increased strain on the tires cause air to leak slowly. The fact that i drove without noticing or a flat tire light coming on ruined the tire. so the following day, after being forced to stay in Ithaca, I bought the only tire in my size in the area open on sunday. 175 bucks. FML.

sorry, i had to vent to people who would appreciate this. UGHHH

Sorry to hear that, man.
Sucks..

But for future proofing, get a can of tire sealant and a cig lighter powered air pump.
More or less what the M cars get as an emergency kit.

I do that cuz, y'never know!!

This is incorrect. They will tow anywhere you want, but if it's not to the dealer, they will charge you for it. I know this for a fact because I had them tow the car to my house so I could get the tires I wanted after my last flat (instead of to the expensive dealer).

wait, but didn't your tpms go on if you were losing pressure?

i'm in the same boat as you. i have blizzaks for winter and pilot sport ps2 for summers, both non-runflat but dont carry a spare. maybe i should invest in a sealant as well.

I picked up a Slime "Flat tire kit" at Target last year that I keep in my car at all times. It comes with a basic compressor that plugs into your cig outlet and also a small bottle of sealant.

Does anyone know how long you can drive on a tire that has been sealed with tire sealant? Is it supposed to be "good as new" or should you replace it immediately once you get to your destination (aka - just a quick fix)?

Slime is supposed to assist you in getting to your destination. It's not a for ever thing. Tire dealers aren't wild about fixing a 'Slime' flat tire, but nobody's life is perfect.

These are meant as a quick fix to get you where you need to go. AKA a Tire Repair shop.

This sealant stuff plays hell on the flat tire and rim as the goo just sticks to everything. It's a bitch to clean off the rim, and your tire is usually a non-repair after this stuff. It will also throw the balance off your wheel a tad.
