Hydro steering Oil pipe
I pulled the undertray from my 2007 M Coupe and found evidence of some "old" dried up oil on the tray. I took a closer look and the expansion hose of the hydro steering oil system looks wet/sweaty on the outside. Is this a concern or is it normal to "sweat" a little? It looked like at one point it left the resudue on the undertray but has not done that for a while - the residue on the undertray has pretty much dried up. I don't use the car very often. What to do?
Item 3: Expansion Hose

I had to replace this hose for the same reason on my car. I didn't discover that it was leaking until a month after my warranty expired. What really irritated me was that I had my Inspection I dones three months before that and if the tech's did their job right they would have identified this problem and replaced the hose under warranty. Nevertheless, I couldn't get my dealer to pay for it and had to do it myself. It's not hard to replace but you'll be hard pressed finding an OEM hose for <$200. It is the most expensive PS hose on the car. It turns out that there are many on this board that have had this problem with this specific hose.

@ mhughett: Thanks for the info! I did not know this was a common issue. Do you have to drain the hydraulic system to replace the hose?

When you disconnect the hose, it will drain itself.
Well about 1/2. Put down plenty of newspapers and wear old clothes. I just did mine a month or so ago, and despite my best efforts I got soaked. |

Has anyone attempted to have a new hose made from a hydraulic shop? Many times they can re-use the existing fittings and just put new high pressure rubber hoses in there.. For $200 it's not a bad idea just to get OEM, but I bet eventually these become NLA.

I doubt it, these appear to be crimped fittings which are one time use. Since the ends are not standard, and have a few bends in them, it'd be a PIA to fabricate. I was hoping you were right, I could get them through work if so.... |

You need to have an oil drain pan below the hoses when you disconnect them as there will be about 1/2qt or more of fluid will drain out. The whole process takes less than an hour. Just make sure you use new washers and note that the washers for one fitting are a different size than for the other side.

I found the cheapest prices for this part to come from online BMW dealers as opposed to aftermarket part suppliers. This is because when I bought there were no aftermarket parts avaiable--only OEM BMW parts. Try the BMW parts store and EBMWparts along with Tischer and BMWMercedesparts.com. I think I got mine for about $180+washers.

I believe I have this issue too. I noticed when I was changing my headlight bulbs Sunday that there some residue on my undertray and on the outside of the hose. GRRR.

Mine was rubbing on the block.
Luckily I spotted it while replacing my CPV. Make sure you hold the metal ends when tightening the banjo bolts so it doesn't rest against the block. I had some left over Fire Sleeve, so I put that on the new hose just to be safe. |
