New Tires

Ok, it has come time to put new rubber on the M, I will be keeping the same size tires but the OE Conti's will be gone!

What should I go with, any recommendations?

Michelin PS2. Costs more but well worth it.

I just bought Hancook Ventus V12 EVO tires in the stock Z4M size for just over $500 shipped with the rebate. These tested out approximately equal to the PS2's and for just about half the price. I know "worth it" is a subjective term but based on all the individual reviews I've seen of both tires, it looked like a deal that was too good to pass up. I haven't put them on yet as they just got here last Friday but I'm anxious to try them, especially since they will be replacing the hated run-flats.

Is price an issue? If not, I like the PS-2s. Personally, I opted for the Hancook Ventus V12 EVO tires in the stock Z4M size and have been very pleased (especially for the price difference).

You also should check out the Conti Extreme Contact DW. Some one recently posted about its appearance in a tire comparo where it did very well.

I'm looking to replace my rear tires as well right now. Does anyone know if I can fit two tires in an M roadster to take to the dealer? They won't let me ship to them directly from TireRack. I'm guessing I can toss one in the trunk and one in the passenger seat.

+1 for both.

PS2s are overpriced.

I normally hate conti but the extreme contact dw is a great tire. they are only one pound heavier (per tire) than the PS2. I have about 500 mile on my DWs and they are the best tires I ever had. Dry traction is great! i don't know about wet weather because my M coupe had never seen rain. Road noise is the same as the stock conti. I think the DWs are the best bang for the buck for the OEM size.

Another vote for the Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs. I got a new set a couple of months ago and have been very happy with them.

With the Direzza Z1 Star Specs, I noticed the closest thing to the stock Conti's 255/40 rear size they offer is 255/35. Is the difference in gap that noticeable with the slimmer profile of the Direzzas?

255/35 is the stock size for the 3.0si and I just switched the tires to non run-flats in the "M" size. Before I made my decision, I measured the diameter of both sizes and there is about .5-.75" difference in the total diameter of the wheel/tire combination. I wouldn't recommend having the stock M size in front and the slimmer 35 series in the rear. It would look a little strange and probably make you think you are driving uphill all the time.

Since Dunlop doesn't offer Star Specs in the stock M size, I went up a size to 235/40 and 265/35 when I put mine on and that seems to work well. Some go another size up to 245/40 and 275/35 on the M, though I would be more comfortable bumping the wheel size up a half inch or so before doing that.

Part of the reason we have gone to 245/275 is that it has the same outside rolling diameter as the stock tire setup, so it's a wider tire with the same overall shape as stock. With the 235s, the tire doesn't make the same number of revolutions per mile as stock.

So assuming I only want to replace the rears right now on my M for a tire the same size as stock, what's a good alternative to the Star Specs?

The Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110 is building a good following in the max performance summer class and is available in the M sizes.

I've had mine now for about 60 miles. They are very quiet, responsive and WORLDS better than the Potenza run-flats. I also got them in the M stock sizes.
