p.s. Used Z4 MC = $35k. ESS CFR500 = $12k, Coilovers, wheels, tires and StopTech 4-wheel BBK = $12k. All together you get 3300lbs with 500hp, Z06 handling and better-than-Porsche braking for $59k!

New Z4 3.5 with decent options = $64k.

Even if you were to start off nearer NEW car price Earl...yours is still a beast. As heavy as the E89 is ...it'll cost alot more than 24 additional K to get it near your mark for sure....if ever.

PWNAGE.........

Earl is being modest about what his car is capable of, and it continues to get better .

Why the thumbs down to the coupe? Considering I've yet to see anyone driving a 335i convertible that wasn't a girl, I think I'd quit throwing stones....

And, if I come "up against" a new Z4 with 425 hp, it'll probably be at a track day, at which time the owner will find out aftermarket suspension doesn't make the thing any lighter, nor does it make the brakes better able to handle multiple high-speed stops.

But I guess as long as you can stomp the loud pedal between stop lights and sit an inch off the ground on giant wheels with the roof down, none of that really matters, right?!?

I've yet to encounter the new Z4 on the track...
I think those owners just prefer driving slow in the fast lane. Kinda like the SLK owners...

Let's not forget about all the heat those turbos will generate on the track. I remember reading about the early 335i's having problems overheating and going into limp mode; the new Z will need a fairly efficient oil cooler for anything more than a few hot laps.

The new Z's brakes will also generate more heat because of the greater amount of kinetic energy dissipated (from the greater mass). Up-sizing rotors will increase unsprung weight, further degrading handling (already adversely impacted by the E89's greater weight). So, modify the suspension for the track. Suddenly you have a car you paid $60k+ for with a voided warranty and special-order parts that must be serviced by a professional or knowledgeable DIYer. So much for that "free" maintenance incorporated in the purchase price of the vehicle, or the ability to have your car serviced at any dealership.

Then there's the LSD, supportive seats, and fun-to-drive factor... take the M.

Since I live in the SF bay area I like having the real time traffic NAVI for auto re-route like my previous 6 series. I don't know, after I drove it several times in DCT, I decided I wanted a manual 6 speed, a lot more fun and engaging than the DCT. If they come out with an M version again. I'll be back in the M game.

No amount of aftermarket suspension is going to mask the SUV like weight.

Did you know the new Subaru FORESTER weighs less than the new Z4? By nearly 150 lbs?

And you speak as if 425+ HP can be achieved with a simple tune...As far as I've seen, 425+ HP comes with very aggressive tunes running race-gas with not-quite-so-street-legal removal of cats and aftermarket down-pipes and intercooler upgrades. And judging from the trouble 135i's are having with cooling and HPFP problems, it's not likely that the new Z4 is going to last more than 2 laps on a track at 10/10th without going limp.

Face it. The new Z4 is not a performance vehicle. It's a luxury cruiser BMW built for the masses. It's not going to ever be like the MZ4.

The M Roadster should be 3/4 tenths of a second faster in the quarter considering the 30 hp difference. As a rule of thumb you pick up a tenth of a second for every 10 hp. There is a point where this curve changes and that's based on the cars ability to gain traction. In the 300 HP range that's not a factor. Also, you pick up a tenth for every 100# you loose. I don't know what the 09 weighs but I suspect it is heavier considering the hard top. The M has to handle better than the new car considering the suspension set up and it's purpose. I suspect the new car is more reserved.

The Z4M coupe/roadster are the last of the harcore, enthusiast breed from bmw.
Agreed, and it's too bad. I hesitate to buy too much BMW gear and pictures for my office, because the way things are going with BMW, when my M Coupe is eventually replaced someday (a long time from now, I love the thing), it'll be replaced with a Porsche. I bought it because I loved the look and feel of the M Coupe, not to mention the extended warranty and the price difference between it and other cars I was looking at. The price difference alone between the M Coupe and others I was considering paid for my new Subaru Outback "winter car".

However, if something happened to my M Coupe right now (knock on wood), then I doubt I'd walk into BMW and buy anything from them, considering their current offerings. Honestly, I'd probably sit tight for a year and try to pick up a lightly used 997 GT3 at some point....that's the level of involvement I believe the M Coupe provides, and it's too bad none of their new cars come close.

Trust me, these are not threats.. There is no single BMW that I'd buy today. There are nice models, like 135, M3, M6, but all with some disadvatages (mainly the weight) and they don't worth that much money for sure. And future is not very bright either. Turbocharged V6 for the next gen M3? No thanks!

Audi R8, Porsche Cayman or 911 etc are the cars I'd buy instead of any M car today.

3,470 lbs if I recall. About 250 lbs heavier than the MZ4.

And, last I knew on forums like these, both positive and negative opinions were allowed. So, I suggest you quit reading the thread if you are unhappy with it's direction....

Agreed on the next generation M3's turbo V6. I never thought I'd see the day. H*ll, leave the current engine alone and just make the next car smaller and lighter! The M3 has never been about pure horsepower, and to me 400+ is plenty for now, just lighten the thing 500 lbs. and we'll go from there!

I would buy the e89 over the m roadster anyday if it were my only car, but it's not and I believe there are better choices for daily driver sporty cars, but not by much. Then the free maintenance and great service keeps me from going to any other brand..to me it's worth alot!

It's all about the circumstances or we would all be driving z06's b/c they are faster in a straight line and in the corners It's not about the brand, straight line speed, aftermarket support, n/a vs fi, driving feel, trackability, maintenance, luxury. It's all of those, and we enthusiasts value different aspects of the vehicle. Obviously us e85/6 enthusiasts value the performance, feel and rawness aspect.

Next time give us your circumstances and vehicle values and you will get a less hectic response
