Quick in the middle of Oil change question???
I'm in the middle of an oil change for a road trip tomorrow. I've done oil changes before but this is the first time on the ///M.
There're still quite a bit of old oil in the oil canister in the engine bay. The drain plug have been dripping very slowly for the last 5 mins. Is this normal? It just seems weird to me that there's that much old oil that I can see/touch in the canister and not much is coming out from the drain plug at the bottom. When should I put in the oil filter and button everything up? thanks, |

Was the oil hot when you started?
Mine drains out of the canister down to the ribs at the bottom, then I sop up what's left with paper towels. I put 1/2 liter in the canister when I'm filling it back up, and it stays in there. (Highly recommended, or it will make a nasty rattle when you start it up.) Probably because I have the plug in the pan.

yes, it was at the 10 o'clock position on engine temp. Oil came out quickly and it was warm hot onto my hand when I unscrew the drain plug.
So it's ok for me to use shop paper towel to dry up the canister? I think I still have an inch of oil til the bottom of the canister... I followed Bill's DIY and there's no mention of oil in the canister... |

I would just sop it up and crack on.
Maybe some others will chime in with their observations. I never have more than 1/8".

The car is front lifted on jack stand 2 feet above the floor...
Drain plug is off, oil cap is off and canister cover is off.. oil is still fairly warm... This will take a half roll of my shop paper towel to suck/wipe it all out. |

Maybe because it's tilted? Not sure.
I always put mine up on 4 jackstands, so it's pretty level.

I also pour about 3/4 to 1 quart of oil, slowly, down the sides of the filter to pre-soak is as part of my refilling routine. That way there's less chance of lubrication starvation on start--or so the theory goes. The goal is to pour very slowly so that it flows over the sides. Report back on progress. No way it should be pooling like that--I get lazy and only jack the front sometimes and I never see anything like that. |

I also agree that there is too much oil left over, not sure why it isn't draining out. I don't remember what the drain looks like.
When I am done there is normally a tiny amount on the bottom, maybe 1/16". I don't think it matters much but I don't use paper towels anywhere in the canister or anywhere else that touches new oil. Mainly because paper is made with lime (rock) and I don't want to leave any tiny paper pieces behind. Same reason I don't clean sunglasses with paper towels (paper is abrasive). I prefer to leave a little old oil behind or use shop rags over using paper to clean it up.
