Gas tank puncture

So evidently something punctured my gas tank last night and long story short, my indie mechanic says I need a new tank. Do the Z4s share the same tank through all the trims? Thanks!

I can't say with absolute certainty, but I certainly don't see why they wouldn't.

I went to realoem.com and getbmwparts.com and found the gas tank P/N, 16117167327, and it looks like it's for all Z4 models.

^I remember the owner's manual saying that the fuel capacity is different in the Z4M though. =\

It probably just feels like the gas tank is smaller!

Excellent news, thanks for the info! Wanted to make sure I wasn't charged an "M" tax on this.

Probably more of a what than a who. Still don't know what it was, all I heard was a loud bang, didn't feel an impact and there was no damage to the front bumper. Thought maybe it was a tire blow out at first but everything handled fine. Wasn't till I pulled over did the smell of gasoline hit me and I saw the leak. Estimate is around 1800+.

I'd do the fuel filter while you're in there. How many miles are on the car?

Holy cow man, that sucks! Punctured fuel tank definitely isn't a common thing to happen. Time to buy a lotto ticket?

Thats pretty sketchy. I wonder what happened.

I bet you could file a claim for that on your insurance as either comprehensive or collision.

^ +1. Definitely talk to your insurance agent about a comprehensive claim.

I'll add my sad story as the only other Z4 owner to replace a gas tank (yes its about $1,800, mostly a labour on top of the tank cost $500ish).

The bottom of the tank sits very slightly below the car, I rubbed the bottom of the car driving onto a car trailer to transport the car (despite putting about 2" of wood under the ramps to reduce the angle). The tank being the lowest part hit and that was enough to break the gas tank pressure testing hose connection which is on top of the tank near the fill hose....

Lesson to others, be very careful on ramps, and with other things that could hit the car bottom.

Good to know. I'm always worries about the front bumper, oil pan, and exhaust tips, I never would have thought of the gas tank as a potential problem.

For those of us with fairly low Z4s this sounds scary
