We don't have so many potholes here in SoCal, but in the right two lanes of the freeways we have entire slabs of pavement that have collapsed from the big-rigs.
The entire lane slopes down for about 10', and then a 1-2 inch step at the end. Haven't broken a rim, but it bottoms my front shocks and startles the crap out of me. I'm surprised I haven't had the air bags go off.

I know what you mean, the left lanes here in Wisconsin seem much smoother, probably also from not as much truck traffic. I stay to the left which means you have to drive fast, which isn't a problem at all!
