Buy and RPI or Diablo--that will drown out the noise! Personally, I just don't drive the car much as the 3K-3.2K RPM speed.
One month till I pick up my Supersprint Race cans in Italy. Hope that will drown it out. Just bugs the heck out of me.

There does seem to be a degree of difference from car to car with this sound.
I found that my M Roady was noisier than my M Coupe.

I complained about the same issue when I first bought the M. Service tech assured me it was normal noise of s54 valve train. Is it different that when you first bought car??

Garage List
I've found my S54 ticking noise sometimes changes with oil changes and it was more pronounced after my first valve adjustment. So much so that I had the dealership re-check everything, including the VANOS, and their S54 expert said the same thing, "it's what S54 engines sound like." I'm not a big fan of the tick until the associated performance drowns out the ticking...

I have the RPI exhaust and I can tell you that it helps drown out the noise, but it doesn't go away. Once your ear is attuned to the sound, I think it can always pick it up. Sort of the way my wife can instantly hear me when I mention her name 25' away from her at a party.

Just finished SS Race installation. Sounds bloody awesome! Can still hear the rattle though. I just can't believe this level of noise is normal...going to take it in somewhere that knows the S54s best.

I don't know, I really don't hear anything unusual. I have a coupe with rpi. The motor does sound more mechanical than ur average car, but I don't have any ticking bothering me. Maybe it just doesn't bother me, I dunno

Boy, I can sure hear it. And I've taken it to the BMW dealership as well as a quality indie shop, and they both say it's a normal sound for the M. If I ever sell this car, that d*mn sound will probably be the primary reason I sell it - it just doesn't sound "normal" to me.

OK I have to ask the tired question.
What are your oil change intervals?

Can't tell you before I bought it but service records seem to indicate it was well serviced. I just changed the oil this past winter...less than 500k on it since.

This is going on with my 07 Z4M right now. Its been 60k+ miles since a valve adjustment so I'm hoping thats it. I don't have any codes, I'm not down on power and it still pulls really hard, MPG is stable. Its just a faint ticking around 2-3k rpm. It doesnt make ANY other ticks at any RPM. Should I go ahead with the valve adjustment and check everything while I'm in there? I'm paranoid of failures, and I'm not really sure what "normal" s54 ticks sound like

Talk about bringing a post back from the dead!! LOL

I would definitely recommend a valve adjustment at this point.
Also gives you a chance to inspect the exhaust hub and other whirly bits.

The Vanos activates around 3k RPM and the loading in the valve train is changing at that point which seems to contribute to more rocker arm noise. Just be thankful the Z4M S54s don't have the high pressure oil flow whine the earlier E46 S54s did. Sounds like a small jet engine under the hood.

thankfully no whirl noise to deal with, just a slight tick. I guess that's the normal sound.
I read yesterday described as "sounds like bacon frying"

It might only be the noise of the fuel injectors. Mine rattles too-even with super low mileage- i just crank up the radio!

Any engine with solid tappets (vs. hydraulic) are going to make noise. Go listen to an old M20 in an E30, it sounds beautiful.

I had that same noise around 2800 to 3400 rpm. I just did a valve adjustment and they were ALL out of adjustment. All 24 valves! The sound has all but ceased. Very happy! There is still a change in pitch around 3k but it's much less noticeable now and so much more tolerable. I feel like it's a tighter engine. Bottom line: check your valves.

not a problem if you are cruising along at a steady rpm.
The noise is from the vanos advancing.
It you stop accelerating the vanos also stops advancing
