Battery Options Summary Listing

The purpose of this thread is to document choices we have for battery replacement (or upgrades) for the Z4 and Z4M. (IDK if there are differences, I haven't paid that much attention to this topic yet. Let me know, and I'll clean up this first post).

This will be a living document that members can update and also refer to. It's only going to be as useful as folks make it, so, please participate!

Here is a link to a Google Spreadsheet. Link allows editing, you don't need to be a Google user.

Instructions: Please add your information, and note forums username and update date. There is a new comment/discussion feature in Gdocs that allows comments/discussion in a "forum like" format. Please use this to add to comments so we can keep a running discussion. I've added a comment like this in the first row, subsequent rows will need new comment features added, just right mouse click "insert comment". Thanks!

Added the o'reilly battery I picked up. Exact specs as OEM, but much cheaper. Sadly I can't seem to be able to get a direct link to their website, so I added the part number to the name.

When I called they suggested a different size, I went with what I found searching the forums and it was a perfect fit and identical to the stock battery I removed.

Hey there,

Well my battery is dead :/

My MCoupe is currently 40 miles away, and can't verify the battery dimensions... are both M Coupe and M Roadster batteries the same?

Two options are listed in the Google Docs link in the first post. Much cheaper than OEM!

Added Canadian lead acid option to spreadsheet. Replaced my OEM battery earlier this year, very happy with replacement - exact fit, substantially more power reserve.

Lots of guys have done the light weight change.
It would be nice if they would add their results.

This is definitely on my short list, but won't be looking seriously for a while yet.

How can a lead acid battery of the same dimensions have more reserve than the AGM? Counters what the manufacturers (Exide) are telling us and contradicts their marketing materials?

The BMW branded battery I replaced (2006 Si) was lead acid, not AGM. According to CT's web page, the OEM battery was 480 CCA - I didn't make a note of what the CCA rating was on the original when I returned it to recover the core charge, but I do recall it was lower than the rating on the Eliminator battery I put in.

I'm going by the numbers I saw on my original battery, and what I see advertised for the replacement.

According to the information in this Exide brochure, their 'Exide Extreme Group 47/H5 has 650 CCA/780 CA, which is exactly what CT advertises for the rebranded premium Eliminator battery I purchased.

If you have additional info, please share ...

My 2006 Coupe came with an AGM - I guess some of the model year 2006 Roadsters did not (IIRC the one in the car is 550 CCA)? In or around 2010 BMW NA/Canada upgraded the standard offering due to warranty claims to an Exide AGM (Italy) with 800 CCA for just about the entire model range (I have one in the garage on a float charger).

The Exide folks presented to us a couple of months ago the move to AGM as the premium offering due to it's cycling ability over lead acid and the demands new vehicles put on batteries due to electronic devices and options like powered mini van sliding doors.

You'll see AGM batteries as the premium offering at CT over the next week.

FYI...you shouldn't just compare CCA/CA numbers alone. You should also look at and compare RC number as well. Some batteries will boast CCA/CA numbers (because that's just what everyone looks at) but lacks in RC, which means that you won't be able to crank too many times before your battery will die (in the case that your car doesn't turn-over).

Reserve capacity on the original battery was 90. As shown in the Exide brochure, the reserve capacity on the premium 'Extreme' replacement is 105.

The new OE AGM by Exide has 140 RC.

What battery group is it? My car has a group 47/H5. I tried purchasing a group 48/H6 as others said they were a direct replacement, but the the battery was too long for my factory brackets. I don't recall the details, but it wasn't a simple matter of sliding an adjustment to allow the larger battery to fit (I would rather not have returned it).

The group 47/H5 is 9 9/16 long, the 48/H6 is 11 inches long. The height (7.5) and width (6 7/8) are the same.

If I look up the replacement using Canadian Tire's parts locator, it returns the H5 size. If I use the US sites for O'Reilly or Auto Value they return both Grp 48/H6 and Grp 47/H5 as possible replacements. If I use the US Walmart battery lookup, it returns H5 only. I tried multiple years and M/non-M variants where possible.

It appears people should double check their existing battery dimensions before making a purchase ...

Here is an update on Z4M battery replacement. I had heard that the 48extAGM battery at O'Reilly was an exact match. In my car, this was true. It was identical. I just swapped out batteries tonight and put both batteries on the counter to compare them before I bought the new one. Both were the same color/markings, both had 760CCA and both had the vent hole in the exact same spot. Most importantly, they were identical in dimensions. Now comes the bonus--for about another week or two, O'Reilly has this battery on sale AND with a $25 gift card. This battery is currently $149.99, $10 off its normal price. With the gift card included, it told me it was finally time to replace my original battery. I was thinking about replacing the old one before the winter but this pushed me to do it now.

So my question is why does Autozone and Advance show that the correct size is H6 or H5 when the 48extAGM is the clone of the OEM battery?
