Anyone think Michelin PSS tires are too loud?

I put them on my Z4coupe 3.0 with VMR 810 wheels today. I just got the car and it's been sitting in my shop while I tinker with it I probably put four miles on it.

So I put them on today expecting them to be awesome and almost silent. The feel great but loud to me. I mean loud enough that there's no way I'm going to drive it like that...

I know you guys are going to say wheel bearings must be bad but I'm going to tell you it sounds like tire noise. I've been an Import mechanic for 30 years and swear it's the tires. I'm going to do some tests either tomorrow or monday and report back..

Anyone else experience this?

Weird. I had those tires and never heard anything out of the ordinary with them. I thought they were pretty quiet. My car is louder than normal and maybe that offsets any louder noise but they sounded pretty quiet overall to me even when moving off throttle.

Doesn't make sense to me. I spent 2 years on the OE tyres then changed to 19s with PSS and didn't notice any extra noise....just better handling and looks.

This. I've run these in 18" and 19" form on a couple different cars. Actually one of the quieter tires I've run. My Direzzas? Super loud. NT05. Loud. Not PSS. Hmmm

How is your alignment? Also what is your PSI at for each tire, could be too high or too low.

34 front and 38 rear. I only put about a mile on the tires because I was busy.

I'm starting to second guess myself. If it were bearing noise it'd have to be all four wheels. The car has 60k miles...

The noise doesn't change if you jerk the wheel from side to side and is still there all the way to a stop..I test drove another one that made the same kind of noise a few weeks ago but I don't remember it on any of the other z4s I've worked on..

I'm going to try to get over to the shop today and put it on the lift to have a listen.. I could just switch them onto another BMW on monday too.

I found my PSS's louder than expected.
I would not consider them extremely quiet, at least while the tread is fresh.
But you have to remember you are used to worn tires which tend to be quieter with less tread to squirm and resonate.
My rear 255 35 18's were on 9 1/2 " rims so that might be a contributing factor.

My advice would be to go with the Michelin PSS's and take one sponge out of your sound resonator. That is the tube that allows you to tune how much intake sound you want to hear in the cabin.
Plus there is always the radio !

There is always the chance that you just might have a defective belt or delamination that lets the tread squirm. Could also be a bend in the rim. You could inspect that on the hoist.

Good Luck

I just put about 8 miles on them and the noise isn't as bad. Maybe 30% less. There's a road near my work where I first tested them and they're still loud as hell even my 9 year old daughter covered her ears and said "loud". I checked the bearings and they're all quiet.

Some of the roads I was on they're weren't all that bad but after reading all the reviews I was expecting near silence.

In comparison I daily drive a 2002 WRX that has Pirelli Cinturano and they're silent but are 16's and have more sidewall.

I'm wondering if some other people who review these tires are used to road noise? I drive every type of car day to day and only a few are this loud and mainly because they have cheap Chinese tires or ply separation.

So were yours really noisy at first?

I recently replaced my five year old set of Hankook V12's with a new set of Michelin PSS's and found the Michelins to be impressively quiet. In addition to the alignment / pressure issues noted above, could it be that one or more of your new tires is faulty somehow?

MPSS vs stock OEM rubber.

From experience, upsizing from 18" stock to 19" MPSS. Less road noise on the Michelins as most other respondents have reported.

No it's road noise from the tires all the way around. On the right road they're ok not great. On the wrong road they roar.

Quieter can still mean loud. I'm saying my tires are louder than every car I drive during the day and I own a busy import shop for 16 years.

I'm going to bolt them on another car after I put 200 miles on them to see if the noise changes...

On another note.. I took a look at how the rear quarters are fixed and the channels in between. I think that might amplify the road noise..

Update: I switched them onto a Z4 roadster and they were as noisy. The car came in with BFG tires on it which were quieter by about 25%.

Still I wouldn't take a 100 mile trip with either tires so I'm starting to think more that the car is just loud.

If anyone is following this thread let me know because I will fix the noise problem.

Mine are very quiet. Suspension seems loud on uneven roads.

I think they are noisy.
But then again the Z4 is a sports car not a comfort cruiser. So Im ok with some road noise in my coupe.
But I also have 19" PSS on my daily driver F30. Known to be poorly sound proofed. They are noisy there too... Just went from my 18" Michelin XI3 winter tires to same width PSS =

I'm slowing down at the shop now so I'll figure it out soon..
