Bumper Refurb and Paint Codes ...Ouch

Paint Codes ? WTF

Postby Bumpy - Mon Aug 26, 2013 12:05 pm
OK ..
Im frustrated ...
Z4M Bumper Project ...
Paint Shop (VW Dealer I have used twice before for insurance repairs - Excellent reputation)
Wanted over a grand to repair and respray bumper...
Too Much ..
So I went the DIY route following various Zed Forum recommendations ..
That meant using bumper specific products..
Adhesion promoter, followed by bumper specific 'flexi primer' ..
All body work similarly completed with bumper specific products.
Everything spotlessly clean ..Soap and Water followed by two acetone wipes
Return to a local shop looking for a reasonable quote ...
And the guy takes a glance and says he won't touch it cause he didn't do the prep ?????
WTF ? ...I guess he doesn't need the work ...Or has been corrupted by the insurance industry ...

Oh well ...
I know what Ive done to the bumper and I well understand the pitfalls of prep ..
Like oil from hands corrupting the finish ..
Now Im considering re-spraying myself ...
Remember I have 32 years as a Shop Teacher and understand wood finishes inside and out ...

Off to NAPA auto supply store where they have an industrial paint mixing facility.
They can load up a couple of rattle cans custom matched ..
But now I need the paint code ????
And I have a print out of my cars build sheet ...
Says it's "ALPINWEISS 3 (300)"
NAPA guy says that's not the number ..That it should be located somewhere on the car ..He doesn't know where ?????

So my question for the combined Z4 Forum Intelligentsia ...
Where the f**k is that number ?
Ive polished just about every square inch of my roadster and I still can't find a paint code ..
Need some help here ...
Plus maybe a single malt and a straw...

Should be good. Have the car there so they can match it perfectly. I repainted my ZHP roof trim after a few $700+ quotes (cost me $57). The paint supply I used tweaked it about 5 times against the surrounding panels before they were satisfied. The match was about 99%. Only I would ever notice the difference and for the savings it was worth it to get rid of the sunburn.

When you say "tweaked it", did you mean they blended in other panels (hence painting additional panels of your car), or did they continuously repaint the part with different mixed shades of the color?

Was this Interlagos Blue BTW? How obvious was the first "unmatched" attempt, assuming they mixed the color based off of MFG specs?

I guess I was a little unclear. The guy mixing the paint brought a sample out to the car numerous times. I did the painting. There was no blending, most likely why the match wasn't 100%. Thanks CA sunshine! It was Imola.

Just an update on Paint codes..
Today I went to paint shop.
He ran Alpine White 300 through his paint data base and came up with about a dozen variations.
So he said he could scan my paint just to be sure.
Not quite like Home Depot but similar.
He cleaned off a corner near the front bumper and held the scanner on the fender..
Downloaded that data while explaining to me that the scanner takes readings from 3 different angles.
The computer listed the top 10 closest mixes !!!
Gawd ..I guess the days of just using the paint code have passed us by

Actually I just ordered a some paint from paintscratch dot com and they asked for my cars VIN number in order to get the correct variation for the paint. I was like WTF? Best of luck to the OP. I would love to have the gonads to tackle something like this on my own. Unfortunately I don't so this winter I will probably be shelling out some good loot to get it done. Please keep us up to date with your progress. Oh, and we need pics!
