Custom Intake Pipe
I was thinking of taking measurements of the intake inlet and getting a custom aluminum tube with the proper inner diameter, thickness, length, and bend angles. Good idea? Bad idea?

Proper=correct...I would measure the outer diameter of the intake inlet and that would be the inner diameter of the tubing. For the length and bend angles, I can figure that out on my own.

Don't see why it'd be a bad idea. If you've got the skills i'd say go for it.
Is your idea to replace the elbow between airbox & inlet manifold? I presume you'd need a very small rubber coupler to join to MAF plus another one at manifold end. Don't forget to roll a bead into the ends so the rubber coupler & band clamp have something to snug up against. Lastly have you seen the rubber samco like hoses that do this same job. I think Turner motorsport sells them for the M3's but they should fit our Z's. |

you should do some searches on this topic first. You'll find many companies have custom filters and intakes. None of them have proven HP gains.
The BMW intake is actually pretty good. Be sure to do a before and after dyno. |

there was a short lived intake that utilized the oem intake port, a carbon fiber heat shield box that contained a cone filter, an aluminum mounting plate and a silicone coupler. this was a proven productive design. creating something like that would be your best bet
