I just saw this in the e-mail from I got from ECS. Shim kit alone is $54.95!
Doesn't look like it has as many shims as the BMW OEM though. Can anyone with an OEM kit compare the contents? (A friend with an E46 M loaned his to me.)

Wiseco manufacturers very high end performance parts for your cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, pretty much anything with an engine. The use of this kit is documented over on M3Forum and various other sites. Personally I've used Wiseco shims in the S14 in my old E30 M, and have first hand experience with them in an S38 and a fellow employees E46 M3. I have no problem stating these are high quality products you should expect to perform just like the factory shims.

If ECS is assembling these kits, it would be nice to have one specifically for the S54. You generally only need 3 or 4 sizes, at most I think 7 or 8 would cover all possible shims needed. I'd have to look through my records, but I think shims from 2.08 to 2.36 would be all you would ever need for an S54. 3 per size is not enough though, I've done valve adjustments where I needed 7 of a single size, and was reusing other removed shims to finish the job. 8 shims per size from 2.08 to 2.36 would be perfect.

I guess I don't feel so afraid taking a chance on such a simple part as a shim, especially when the savings are so compelling. I'll pick one (maybe 2) of these up come inspection time. Cost of S54 ownership is a good deal lower now

I agree there are only a few sizes that are needed and definitely more than 3 of the mid range Each shim has a different part number. I ordered just the range I needed. If ECS did an S54 kit, it would be great!!

Nice find! Is it weird that I'm kind of excited to do the valve adjustment on my car?

I figure for a total valve adjustment newbie (me) who likes to work slowly to make sure I get it in "one take" it would take 6hrs. Yes/no? |

I did mine a couple of months after buying my car in 2012. A friend who owned the kit helped me out. If you've done mechanical work before, it's no big deal. I had done valve adjustments years ago on other cars, but none that used shims. You just need to be organized and careful, check things twice, and be patient. The biggest caveat is to make sure that you have plugged all holes with shop rags or shop towels. You may drop a couple of shims, but as long as everything is plugged you just have to find the shim and fish it out. It took us about six hours but we also stopped for lunch in the middle and took a break.
It helped having a friend who had already done the valve adjustment on his E46 M3, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it myself next time.
