Z4m AFE INTAKE - related to hesitation at low rpm?

Hi folks- I bought the AFe Cai a couple months ago and have noticed a slight hesitation, most noticeable in 2nd gear when accelerating at 25-2800 rpms. It almost feels like a turbo motor where you are waiting for a second for the turbo to spool up. Could this be the new intake? I never had this before the intake was installed. I dIdnt say anything right away because I thought the oem Ecu would eventually adapt to the new intake.

Anyone else experience this with aftermarket intake? Do I need a tune to fix this?

Same thing here, I don't mind it. I think a throttle reset would fix it

FWIW, my AFE doesn't behave like this at all. In fact, when it first went on, I noticed greater throttle response - not less.

I have it too. It's most noticeable when cold, and it's in all gears. I was afraid it was the VANOS bolts for the longest time.

i've got a gruppem intake and don't notice any, slight or whatsoever, hesitation between the rpms described. i'm with johanness in tt i've noticed improved throttle response and power delivery is consistent and relatively linear through the rev range.

Thanks guys. I feel I've lost some of that classic m-motor linear-ness. Are there any mechanics here that can explain the hesitation caused by the intake? Will a tune help smooth things out?

^fen, do u have any other mods tt may affect ur car's performance? u describe a very specific range and tt's unlikely to have to do with the intake itself. offhand, 2500rpms is right about where peak torque starts.

Fen335i, not sure if you have it installed with your AFE or not... but I have read/heard that the silicon elbow shouldn't be used in conjunction with the intake on our cars. However, people have only noted a rougher idle with it's use, not lag/hesitation per se.

I followed afe's install instructions, so I probably used the elbow you described

the only other mod on the car is some new mufflers, Stromungs that we put on a couple weeks ago. But this hesitation/lag issue was present before the mufflers were installed.

Is there any harm in resetting the throttle? I was reading some older threads that recommended that....anyone have directions on how to do it? Is it just done by the ignition key? (read that on the non-M car thread)

my VT2-500 with the Agressive ESS vanos timing has no hiccups in low down pull..., how about getting a tune to compliment the intake?

fen, reset ur throttle mapping by inserting the key and rotating it to position 2 just prior to cranking the engine ignition. leave it in position 2 for 10 seconds, reset the key to the fully off position without removing the key for another 10 seconds, and then turn it back to position 2 for 10 seconds. then crank the ignition without removing the key during the entire process.

Thank you, I will give that a try.

I would look into software to solve that issue as well.
