Exclamation torque converter play

I have a 2005 2.5i, with the manually shiftable 5 speed automatic transmission.
there is so much slop in the torque converter, that the car sometimes sounds like it has a CVT instead of a 5 speed unit.
especially when shifting manually, not only is acceleration compromised and the effectiveness of downshifting limited, but it's an unsatisfying aspect of a car that I love driving as a whole.
if I were to buy another eventually, it would definitely be the 6 spd manual, but that's not in the cards for now.
are there adjustments or modifications that can be made to the transmission or torque converter to tighten it up, so that there is less slop and you can feel the shifts?
I don't have the technical sophistication of most posters here, and I'd likely have the work done by a BMW pro.
thanks in advance for any input or suggestions.
