Starter help e90

Yo so I just had a question about my car. Car has good battery alternator is good fuses are good but no start no crank just a click. Was wondering if I should change ground strap first before diving into the starter 2010 328

Can you read codes? Have you ever replaced your starter? If not most likely you nee a new starter. I replaced mine on my 06 E90. Lasted about 10yrs.

Yea I just have a code for starter actuator. I read a lot that 99% of times nothing happens when your actual starter is bad and only the ground strap is bad when you get a click. But either way went and got a brand new starter just to be safe and some universal ground strap from my local parts city hopefully it works lol

Somebody posted that you can check whether ground strap is bad by using jumper cable from ground to engine, providing alternate path for ground. You might look into that first. Good luck

When a starter clicks it could be a few things.

1. Starter itself is engaging but just doesn't have the power to turn the engine.
2. Bad power/grounds
3. Engine is seized and starter will never be able to turn the engine.

Have you attempted to turn the crank by hand with a large breaker bar just to make sure the engine isn't locked up?

I really don’t think my engine seized. I don’t have any engine issues not even a CEL. And before it just stopped starting completely , it would take a couple button presses to get it to start and that was for 2-3 days before it completely stopped starting

Not having the power to crank is most likely a bad ground strap tho or something right ? Alts good battery’s good fuses are good and only code I get is a starter actuator code

Yeah, connect engine to the frame with a jumper cable (just one color). Replicates the path of the ground strap. Grab one of the oil filter housing bolts, and connect over to the ground bar on the passenger side.

It was starter. Changed it out fired right up. To my surprise too cause when I was down there I found a massive ground strap that was corroded right in the middle so bad that it broke. But I had absolutely no way to get to parts city to buy a replacement but definitely will be getting it replaced tomorrow!

A bad ground strap could have caused premature starter death. More resistance = lower voltage = more current = more heat (and longer start time). It's also why high current devices (like an air compressor) will tell you NOT to use them with an extension cord.

Rust belt life. Check your ground straps fellow rust belt dwellers!

Not sure how to reply to your comment but you could be right about the ground strap. I’m gunna grab one tomorrow I’m pretty sure it’s the engine to body ground
