Door card leather insert removal?

Has anyone removed the leather insert that is in the middle of the door cards before? While an entire door card swap would be ideal, I am wondering if it is realistic to swap the center panel only. Thanks!!!

I haven't looked at it myself but it definitely can be done.
I've seen a few custom upholstery interiors done on the door card panels.

You do have to watch that the proper stiching thread is used, as it's an air bag release panel

I looked into this and even took a door card apart. Involves melting some plastic welds to remove the panel.
Ultimately I bought a different pair of cards, seemed like too much work.

Like intgr8r says, the side air bags are a concern

It would be with OEM panels (looking potentially to go from nappa black to Imola), but had a feeling it would be a bit of a headache. Unfortunately for me, the cards I am looking at are standard cards, while I currently have extended leather, hence the question about the inserts only. Thanks!

On a newer Mini Cooper, I built custom door panels that required removing a lot of the plastic welds. I ended up using heavy duty hot melt to put it all back together and they never came apart............ to this day....... after being in the car for many years.......... and now sitting in my attic......... in the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter. Still holding, waiting for a new owner. Regardless, my point is re-attaching those plastic welds is not a big issue if anyone is concerned with that.

Are the door cards on Z4M's and Z4's the same? I know there are different insert options between the two but will they both mount in an M coupe?
