I've read that the some cone filters and cold air intakes can actually rob power from our cars (even though they sound great), so I don't want to go that route.

My question is: do you get any sound benefits from the drop in filters? Or does the box muffle the sound too much to notice?

Second question: is there a preferred drop in? I've heard the oiled ones can foul up the MAF sensor, but I think that is only because people when they clean them over oil the crap out of them. Will a new filter foul the MAF? It seems the oiled ones actually trap more particles. You don't want dirt getting into your engine, into the oil, and wearing parts. So it's important to have a good filter.

Lastly: what about removing the other filters from the air box? I heard there is a carbon filter in there as well. Is that good to remove?

I took the carbon filter out years ago and put in a drop-in replacement K&N.
The carbon one is in the circular output part of the filter box.
Can't comment on the sound because I can't hear anything over the roar of the cans.
Oiled filter won't foul the MAF if you oil it right (sparingly).
Each time I clean and reoil the filter I wait until I've driven it a few times and then pull the MAF and hit it with some CRC MAF cleaner.

Thanks for the info! After reading a bit more, I'm pretty sold on the Eventuri. Sounds great, and gives a 10hp boost.

Haven't heard of any downsides yet with that system.

Heard a rumor that any obvious aftermarket intake will fail you on smog visual inspection here in CA.
Just sayin'.

My smog joint hasn't figured out my secondary cat delete.

That was the main reason I'd sold my Eventuri. Just had the car smogged this past week and the guy spent a good 5 minutes looking under the hood and under the car with flashlight. Seems like they're more picky on visual now that the sniff test had gone away. I guessed he needs to justify the $50 he's charging for the simple 1 minute OBD2 test now

I like the idea of sticking a big honkin' BMW or ///M badge over the AFE or Eventuri logo.
If it says "BMW", it must be stock.

^^ You could fit a karbonius airbox with an oem snorkel then stick on the 'bmw m power' logo. Any questions just show them some press pics of the CSL together with the BMW part number from the snorkel

Hold on....the sniff test has gone away? That is a game changer then. I was thinking of euro headers and keeping secondary cats just to see if I can pass visual. But assumed I can’t pass a sniff test.

Ok looks like I’m way late to the game haha. Sniff test hasn’t been a requirement since 2010 or 11 after some quick reading. Carry on

Hasn’t been a requirement, but has still been around for a while.
Shops didn't change overnight, so you're not that late to the game.
SoCal went to OBD only round about 2016.

I took out my carbon filter and dropped in a k&n panel filter onto my car, its been on my car for 2+ years and its been washed and oiled sparingly a handful of times now. I havent had any issues with the maf inputting false air flows calculations for the pcm. I dont think it made anymore induction noise from the k&n drop in alone, but with the addition of deleting the carbon filter media element it gained minimal noise (maybe placebo effect)
