Is valve cover gasket required every time?

Every time I've had my valve cover off, I've replaced the gasket with the OEM BMW valve cover gasket. However, when I was researching the VANOS, Raj at Beisan said in the documentation that the OEM valve cover gasket is made of Viton, and therefore, it was not necessary to replace it:
Quote:
Note: S54 engine valve cover gaskets and bolt grommets, except front two corner grommets, are made from Viton and thus do not wear and need replacement. Valve cover front two corner grommets are Buna and thus wear and need replacement.
I just dread the thought of an oil leak from the valve cover, but that gasket isn't all that cheap, and if it doesn't need to be replaced every time, I wouldn't mind skipping it. I'll be coming up on my 60K valve adjustment probably this spring, and I replaced the current valve cover at 50K.

What do you guys think? Eliminate the risk of leakage and replace with OEM gasket, or is it stupid to waste $62 on a perfectly fine Viton gasket with only 10K miles on it?

I've re-used the gasket more than once on the valve cover without issue.

Same here, assuming it's of recent vintage. Grommets, as well.
I had a go around with valve timing after getting INPA and finding that the "mechanic" that replaced my Vanos bolts did a shoddy job of the valve timing.
Took me 3 tries to get the timing correct, on a 6 month old valve cover gasket.
No leaks. Just make sure you carefully remove the cover leaving the gasket flat on the head.

Gotta wonder why 2 out of, what, 13? grommets are Buna.

I wondered that, too.
