What's the best way to put a mic into the "sound generator" tube?

I've been playing around with a couple external mics, and both of them pick up squat from inside the cabin. One is omnidirectional, and the other is directional. I figure shoving one of them into the sound generator tube might work, but I have no idea how to feed a wire from the cabin to the hole in the firewall that the tube connects to.

Anyone have any ideas?

maybe it doesn't need to be inside the tube...just near it. maybe stick the omnidirectional mic up in the passenger's side footwell dash cavity?
