M Roadster - vibration/noise in 1st and 2nd gear only
So, I'm very new into the Roadster thing...also this is my first experience with the S54 M motor. But, I notice that I get a little vibration noise that seems to be coming from the motor area when accelerating in 1st and 2nd gears...actually once you get past about 4500 rpms it goes away...and I don't notice it in 3rd-6th gears at all. Is this just normal stuff for this car and motor?
It's not a terrible sound or anything, I just noticed it and thought to myself "is this normal"? Every car has its own unique sounds... |

This motor makes a normal vanos noise around 3k-3.5k.
or There are issues with the motor mount bolts being loose. http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthre...=328626&page=2 Engine will tilt to the side if they break. or There are also issues with the cam gear bolts coming loose. http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=321494 Sounds like more of a "marble in a can" |

^ thanks all. Yea, that was my worry (motor mounts getting loose)...I hope that's not it. I don't drive it every day (it's my better half's car)...but I will drive it tomorrow some more and try to narrow it down on whether it's something that should be looked at or not.
I'll let you know what I find... |

I'd be hoping it's not the cam gear bolts.

Can you describe the Vanos noise? I drove it a few more times and decided to bring it in to the dealer and have them take a look at it to be safe. It's just a lousy rattling sound from about 2500-3500 rpms...It's most noticable in 1st and 2nd gears, but you can hear it in 3rd pretty well at that same rpm level...and a tiny bit in 4th if you really listen for it. Once past 3500 rpms, the nice straight six intake sound takes over and sounds fantastic...

I'm sorry. I'm not a very descriptive writer. Can anyone else help him? You may try searching m3forum for a description of the rattle. To be honest, I don't notice mine. I just know what my engine sounds like and if it sounds different, I will notice. If you are really noticing a noise issue, there may be something wrong.

Hey Guys - just an update to close this thread. I took the car into the dealership about a week ago and they had me ride along with the tech. Turns out to be a normal sound for this car (according to him)...They also checked the torque on engine mount bolts as well (per the paperwork I got), and all is fine.
