M Class

This is a general question, but I wanted to ask it because most of you are experts on this topic. First off, I presently own a 2003 Z4 3.0i. Great car, but I'm getting tired of being bounced around in the car while I'm driving plus, I'm 6'1, and getting in and out has become very old. So with that said, here's my question. I would very much like to buy an M-class BMW. Not a new one but older (so I can afford it) with low miles and low maintenance, although that might be an oxymoron for BMWs. So, what do you all suggest?

Thank you.

Greg.

A ///M version of the Z4 will be no bigger than the Z4 you already have, so I suggest getting an M5!

But no low mileage, older ///M car will be cheap to purchase, or cheap to maintain!

Get the Z4's close cousin. An E46 M3. Still affordable, relatively reliable, relatively inexpensive to maintain. ("Relative" meaning when compared with other BMW M cars.)

EDIT: If you're not hung up on getting an M, there are some nice, less expensive options. Look at cars with the N52 motor such as the 328i and 128i. It's a great, reliable motor, and it is extremely light, which makes for excellent handling characteristics. Plus it can be jazzed up with a 3-stage intake (if not already equipped with one), which adds 30HP. How often can you do that on a normally aspirated engine?

I’ll second the recommendation for looking at the E46 M3. I’ve had one for 4 years now, and it’s a wonderful counterpoint to the Z4. The M3 feels roomier inside and is easier to get in and out of. The ride is also more forgiving than my Z4MC. Also a usable back seat, and the trunk is huge compared to the Z4MC.
