Top Speed in a car.

Disclaimer: I am not a NASCAR fan so don't judge me:

So I went to Kentucky Motor Speedway this morning with a group of friends and family, one of us to drive and the rest to do ride-alongs in a stock car. They told us the top speed was around 160 mph. Unfortunately it started raining the first lap of my ride (I was last) so the driver may not have hit that speed before returning to "the pit". However, I'm pretty sure he ran out of gears before he slowed down so we had to be pretty close to top speed. I wasn't charged and I may go back tomorrow for another try.

Now I once rode with a friend that had an e46 and he claimed that we were doing 160. If felt pretty fast but not "oh-my-god" fast. Everyone that I've talked to that has done the Nascar thing told me it was shit-your-pants-fast but it didn't feel anywhere near that to me. This includes my dad and my brother, who I know have gone at least 160 in their Z06s. Is there a certain speed you reach as a passenger when you feel like you're going to dirty your britches? And what is the fastest you've ever driven a car?

I took my GLi up to 165 before but real Nascar cars go 200+ (talladega and big tracks) so only 160?

By Gli, do you mean a Jetta? Pardon my ignorance but that doesn't sound possible. The cars were obviously governed, I doubt anyone would insure them if they went up to 200+ mph but I agree that would be a lot cooler. I talked to one of the drivers and they are mostly sprint car guys, not Dale Earnhardt Jr. or Bobby Labonte. That and the track is only 1.5 miles so there aren't many straightaways like Talladega.

Yes my Jetta GLi had the GIAC software flash as well as other modifications to the car, the limiter was removed so yes it went that fast.

I have done over 150 in my Z4MC at Pocono Tri-oval as well as 156 mph at the Texas mile. At Pocono, the car feels very fast as the windows are down but at the Texas Mile (windows up) the car felt like it does at 100 mph until I let go of the accelerator pedal - then it felt like an air brake and gave me a good sense of speed.

Thanks for the response. Do you know if our cars governed or restricted by air resistance?

The car is electronically limited to 155MPH (+- 10% or maybe 5%) from the factory. You need to get it tuned to have the speed limiter removed.

It is said, don't remember where I heard/read it, that the car aerodynamically will not do more than 188MPH based on HP/torque and air resistance.
I have seen some videos of someone in Europe with 177MPH indicated on his speedometer. You would need a LONG straight to get to the absolute velocity of the car...

Last time I was at Pocono they let us run the tri oval for ones session. I don't know how those NASCAR guys don't get bored... After you pound around at 160+ mph for 10 laps it get a bit lack luster. It was fun hitting 165mph (on the speedo) though.

During our European Delivery in May 2011 I hit an indicated 160 MPH/260 KPH on the Autobahn between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Munich in our 335is Coupe. Supposedly electronically limited to 155 MPH, but the difference was probably due to speedo variance/error. It takes a lot of concentration and is pretty tiring. You need to be hyper alert for whatever cars are doing way ahead of you. Not much need to look in the rear view mirror though!

We spent a lot of time between 140-145 MPH. We could have driven all day at 120 MPH. I'm definitely going back and doing that again!

Top speed I've done in the M coupe was 153mph (GPS-recorded) somewhere in "Mexico"
This was done after I had my ECU tuned, which supposedly removed the factory speed limiter; but I've yet to try it out to see if I actually got what I paid for
At the time, my speedometer read somewhere between 160-170mph. I didn't really take my eyes off the road in front of me for obvious reasons.

Not sure if ECU limits at speedo indicated 155mph or actual (e.g. GPS-recorded) speed

+/- 10% indicated or actual?

Limiter might not work in 5h gear

Unless you did some crazy aerodynamic mods to that thing, NFW it would do 165, no matter what you had under the hood - it would have been drag-limited to something probably substantially south of that figure.

Plus you'd have to be bat shit crazy to want do do 165 in ANY VW product. Except for maybe the Phaeton.

I'm not going to get into a pissing match with you, If you don't trust a VW product then that is your choice, I grew up around them and know what they're and my GLi are capable of.

Any time I was riding with my ex and she went over 35mph I felt like I was going to soil myself more often than I would like to admit.

Needless to say, I cannot date a bad driver....

You have to take it to limiter in 5th in order to beat the limiter in 6th.

The 155 mph limiter is calculated from the wheels, so after speedo error you "should" be doing less than that.

Haven't done anything major in this car. I will record my fastest speed in a couple weeks at Mid-Ohio though as I travel to China Beach

Use a gearing calculator, and you will see you are doing well over 155 in 5th.

The speed limiter is set to the max recommended sustained speed rating for the tires that come on the car from the factory. I may be wrong, but I doubt that the limiter doesn't work in the higher gears unless it has been disabled by third party software. The lower gear limiter is more than likely a rev limiter and not a speed limiter.
