Double Din in the Z4... maybe...

so i had this idea ever since i purchases the car 1 year ago. not until i started going through the pages of zporn i came onto this picture:

so it is possible!!!

it doesnt look like it might be that hard to fabricate. looking at the nav retro fit thread:

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=6067

now my question is, can i actually buy the nav base (not the screen itself) that i can mod?

the bezel around the double din radio can be fabricated out of 2 single din kits and some fiberglass work

I'm working on a double din system for the Z4, will take some time to be available but it will come, Its possible but many modifications of the AC vent ducts are require, not something that I would recommend as a DIY tho.

so the middle vent is only $18.... im going to masscre it . there is plenty of room behind the dash. 3 steps to this as i see it.

1. fit the radio, take interference measurements with the middle air duct.

2. cut middle air duct to allow radio placement while sealing the main middle of the airduct and creating 2 exit ducts further back by the beginning of the center neck area. so instead of have 3 outlets 1 to left, 1 right and 1 massive center, it will have 4 outlets 1 right, 1 left and 2 smaller centers essentially right and left of the radio.

3. fabricating the front fascia where the old air vents and radio used to be. main 7" double din centered, 2 air ducts (possibly always opened) 1 to each side of the radio.
(this will be the meat and potatoe so to speak of the whole build) probably the most time consuming.
edit*(what was done in this orange car was just a cutout on the dashboard and somesort of vent put in place. that would be ideal but i have no clue where to find a vent like that)

part #3

Looks good, but in terms of functionality I don't like it. You will have to use the touch-screen to control the radio and this takes a lot more effort and concentration away from driving. It is much easier with the original buttons.

You sure about that? I'm not sure what model that is but when I used to have a Pioneer Avic, it had hard buttons on the side/bezel for radio functions. Regardless, there are many aftermarket double din options which I'm sure will not require to use soley the touch screen for all functions.

I really like that setup with the vents on the side. I do like the idea of having a DD with buttons for the radio as that does sound safer while driving.

In any case, I would prefer to have the original navy installed and keep the original radio buttons. Although this looks good, it looks a bit out of place to me. Does not look original, and I like original looks.

Wow...looks good so far....the vents on the side are a better and easier idea than the original posted picture. Keep us up to date.

Very interesting!

What I would love is to keep the navi/monitor where it is and just update the screen itself with a new LCD (or LED) with nice resolution + update graphics of the system menu etc. Probably no way to do this but if anyone brings something like that out I'm first one to buy it
