'04 3.0i Making Up-shift Noises Under Heavy Acceleration - Normal?
Hi everyone,
My '04 3.0i (steptronic auto slushbox, approaching 100k miles) has been making up-shift "snorts/farts" under moderate to heavy acceleration, with it being more pronounced under full load. It happens in all modes, regardless of shift mode used and if sport is activated. Closest thing I can relate it to is newer cars equipped with DCT or DSG making their heavy load up-shift noises. While it sounds kinda neat (and admittedly, makes me giggle when it happens), just curious if any other members have experienced this on their cars and if I should be concerned or looking for gremlins Thoughts?

Trans fluid and filter was replaced last year, as well as replaced two years prior to that. Current life on the fluid is about 1.25 years and maybe 12,000 miles. Used OEM filter and gasket, as well as RedLine D4 ATF since this car sees A LOT of autocrosses with the misses driving

Noises are from the transmission, or the exhaust?
Several months back my exhaust was farting under hard acceleration. Sounded like a misfire, but couldn't really feel it. Turned out to be a coil that was arcing through the side.

Also, did you have an engine code for the misfire? Two autocrosses ago a buddy of mine was driving the car at his first event and the car went into limp mode on one of his runs. When I pulled the code (used Carly for BMW) the only code that came back read "Misfire Cylinder 11"

Mine got progressively worse over the course of a week.
Coming home from work one night I stomped it hard going up a steep hill. It popped a couple of times and then took one cylinder out of the rotation. SES light came on and I limped up the rest of the hill on 5 cylinders. Once I crested the hill and unloaded it, the missing cylinder came back on line and the SES went out. When I got home I scanned it and got Misfire, Cylinder #5. Pulled the #5 coil and there was a little grey dusty spot on it near the top and a corresponding black dusty spot on the side of the spark plug tube. I work with high voltage for a living, so I immediately recognized it as an arc. Cleaned the spark plug tube with alcohol, popped in a spare coil. All better now.

Got it, mine has been doing this for a couple months now, and the autocross incident where it cleared up immediately after coming to a stop is the only time I encountered limp mode. When I swap plugs I will pay special attention to the coils and sidewalls looking for an arc. Thanks!

UPDATE!
After replacing the plugs, noticed 4 out of 6 coil packs were looking shoddy. While I did not see any signs of arcing from the coils, given the mileage of the car (and assuming they were original), I opted to replace them as well. After a quick drive, it appears the noise was related to old plugs and/or coil packs, as the sound has not replicated for me.
