I modded my exhaust! But, is the farting noise normal?

It's late and I can't get any video of my car, but I did the cheapest mod available by paying a custom muffler shop $200 to switch my 3.0si muffler with a customized fiberglass one, while keeping my orginal muffler tips. The look from the outside is the same, but the sound of the car increased 300% when I accelerate. Oddly, once I let go of the gas paddle, the car makes this farting noise that sound like "pop pop pop". Is this normal? I was told by the muffler guy that this is normal and increased performance by 6%, but what do you guys think? Also, I love the acceleration noise, but does the poping noise make the car sound cheap?. Anyways please help answer my question and tell me what you think.

My stock exhaust does this on my Si it's called a "gurgle/burble" whatever you want to call it. Mine only does it when I gas and let off the gas quickly. If it's excessive it will become annoying but you may like it. I doubt it increases performance by 6% sounds like a marketing ploy.

The fart noise or "burble" like BimmerZealot mentioned is not abnormal. It's there on a stock Z4 but so quiet that you can barely hear it. On my '04 Z4 3.0 with ACS exhaust, the burbles were much louder. On my Z4M with Eisenmann sport now the burbles are not as pronounced.

As for the 6% performance gain, the guy was either clueless or simply lying to make a sale. Your Z4 actually just lost some torque and is slower than before. The difference is probably not big enough for you to notice it though.

From Automobile Magazine's review of the Z4 M:

"Turn the key, and the in-line six's familiar metallic energy fills your eardrums, overlaid with farts and pops from the exhaust overrun."

My second most hated sound after that of a huge diesel next to me in traffic.

If you have to radically change the exhaust to get any kind of performance out of your bike, you bought the wrong motorcycle. It used to be so fun to wake up at 2 am to the sound of the Harleys going through the Cafe Rio area setting off car alarms as they went.

Not in the way I am sure you are meaning it. More like cause we have to hang on for dear life. Nothing like being scared to turn a gal on.

So nice to have you figured out 155mph.

I ride a harley, most people don't know that stock harleys are no louder than any other motorcycle thanks to the EPA, people change the mufflers to make the bike louder or give it the "harley sound". The real "harley sound" which they unsuccessfully applied for a patent on is because its a Vtwin single pin crank which gives it the staccto sound or potatoe potatoe sound, because of that design no other motorcycle sounds quite like it. As someone metioned earlier those loud mufflers hurt mid range torque and HP

who the hell gets scared on a Harley? some times i ride my father's modified Night Rod like hell and still wonder why they even call it a motorcycle.

My Ducati, on the other hand, will do the trick. Real power, real vibrations, real handling, real sensations!!!

I had a buddy with a hardtail. That was an experience to ride. I was always sure it was going to shake off something important.

Mine sounds like that and I love it. It sounds mean. It may attract people's attention but I don't care. I can't wait until VF Engineering finally releases the Supercharger kit for my car.
