My wife's front bumper, my first paint job

My wife's 2004 Z4 was hit the other day in a parking lot by some ass that just took off. It wasn't major damage but took a hunk out of the front bumper. It had numerous rock hits so I decided to give a shot at painting it myself. I purchased a 4 stage HVLP turbine, gun and respirator.

Worked for a couple of days sanding out the damage and rock hits and filled in any major damage with the flexible two part filler from Bondo. Cleaned, cleaned and cleaned and then cleaned again. I used Bulldog adhesive promoter on the bumper and then primed the bumper. I used PPG urethane paint and clear coat. I applied three coats of base and three coats of clear. I had some minor orange peal in a few small areas but overall I was very happy with the results. I love the HVLP spray equipment, being a total rookie at painting I was very nervous about my wife not being happy with the results but she was extremely pleased.

I will post more pictures when mounted

Thanks for the nice comments...

I'm waiting for a new grill that should arrive in the next couple days and I will take some pictures of it mounted.

I wanted to experiment on her car since her's had over 70K on the clock when she bought it. It came with a lot of nicks and scratches I figured I had nothing to loose other than the cost of the equipment. My car is a 2007 Z4M coupe with 18K on the clock and it has some damaged fangs I want to fix and I was real nervous about painting it but after this I don't think I would be nervous at all.

I'm interested in how long the paint will last, or how susceptible it will be to rock chips, given that it hasn't baked in the oven.

Just curious as how you did your paint matching? That is my #1 concern when repainting anything, then comes the actual paint/painting quality. Gray/Silver and variations of those are the toughest to match.

bumper porn

I'm still waiting for the grill and a new bumper clip but here it is sort of mounted on the car.

As far as baking is concerned I'm not sure if it makes much of difference. The clear is two part one part being a catalyst. I think baking the paint just hurries things along reduces the chances of dust and contamination. The clear I used was DCU2002 and the Hardener was DCX61. The dust free time is 70 minutes and the Air dry time is 16 hours vs 30 minutes for forced dry. If I was in business painting cars I would force dry as time is money.

I drove the car over to automotive paint store and they tried to match as close as they could. They had three shades of #472 (the car color), due to different batches that BMW used. It does look like it might be a tad darker but I won't know for sure until I get it out in the sun.

yeah it looks a tiny bit cooler ie more blue in the mix. Sunlight is the only for-sure, but it's likely off a bit, like others said silvers and greys are tough to match

I don't know how I would possibly manage the 70 minutes no dust exposure without a paint booth.

That's pretty amazing, was your total cost (paint & equipment) <= respray job by a body shop?

Kudos to you for even attempting this in CA. Would never dream of it here in the OC. It would be certain to attract every hyper-eco for miles around, including the SCAQMD. Have painted a few cars when living at various places on the East Coast, miss the convenience. Nice job!
