Replacing the 6in subs behind the seats
Last week I had the passenger side subwoofer go out. It was making a terrible buzzing noise and no matter how I messed with the fading, bass, balance, etc it would not go away. Anyways, I went to order one from BMW parts and they quoted me $350 as an employee. Hard no to that.
I see that the sub is a phillips unit and looks pretty generic. Are there any after market options that would be somewhat plug and play to replace both subs behind the seats? If I am going to spend $350 I would rather get somewhat of an upgrade. Thanks! |

These speakers can sometimes be found on ebay for an acceptable price. Fitting aftermarket speakers would require a different amp which means you need a different amp for all speakers as its an integrated unit.

^those will be very poor subs

I dont know how an 8 ohm will perform (amp wise, will it blow up, get hot or go into a safe mode), but the other problem is: try and find a suitable 8 ohm sub (long throw) in that size and suitable for that enclosure. I dont know if you know anything about speaker design (do you know what Thiele/Small parameters are and can you use them in calculations?), but not every speaker is suitable for every enclosure (both in size and enclosure type). So the best way to go is to get a used speaker from ebay. They are plentiful and not expensive. Usually $30-60 ex shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-2008-BM...-/222407504163 http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-02-08-BM...-/262712200754 http://www.ebay.com/itm/bmw-e85-e86-...-/182499529689 etc

Try Bavsound? I know they have speaker upgrades and subs. Just never looked up for our z.
If I listened to music more often then I would use their speaker upgrade for my e46. |

I replaced both subs with JL Audio 6 in subs. Took a bit of modifications to fit them (I removed the sound insulation and put covered the opening with sound deadening mat). Had to call very the signals and amp. They sound better than the originals but can't get a lot of bass out of a 6" woofer.

I'm working on something myself. Going to keep the factory system as is but adding a 10" shallow mount sub in the trunk along with an amp to power it. I' building a custom battery cover to replace the current one out of 3/8" plastic then mounting a box to it for quick install and removal...the box is low enough to let the sunshade still work but big enough to give the minimum volume of 0.35 square feet the pioneer sub needs. Then attaching a line out converter to the speaker wires. Should be done in a month or so...taking my time so I get it right.
All this will be fully reversible other than tapping into the speakers for the Line Out Converter. So if I choose to put it back as is... I'm by no means a music buff or anything like that...just the stock Z4m system in my opinion creates no base. |
