Z4M Engine Noise - SOLVED, water pump failure - Pics + Video
Update: water pump failure confirmed. Pics in post #8 Original post: Noticed the car making some noise a few days ago, it's somewhere I between a grumble and clunk, can hear in video... Been doing some research on the M3 forums, and it sounds just like other videos I've seen of timing chain guide failures. Going to verify this weekend when I get some time. Sucks because I was just in there doing valve adjustment a month ago, bolts and tabs were in good shape... Didn't notice the guides Other threads I've found: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=432569 http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=453671 Might just take the opportunity to Vanos overhaul anyway... 62k btw Last edited by yousefnjr; 02-01-2016 at 01:30 PM.. |

Should mention that the noise is the only symptom here, no lights or error codes. Maybe its affecting performance, I can't tell
Ordered the guide, and also ordered the Beisan S54 stuff (rattle kit, seals, pump disk, etc). Was going to buy the timing tools (bridge and pin) but Besian recommends renting from www.bimmertoolrental.com, anybody have experience with them? Certainly hate paying for the parts, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited to install them |

The above noise is the vanos camshaft bolts, you need to get the revised BMW bolt, while you're at it get a new guide.
I see that you did already get all of these, happy vanos maintenance |

Took a closer look at things, it's the water pump. There's brown coolant that's been flung around the engine bay (you can see it on the side of the airbox and wiper fluid res in the video). Hopefully I'll have some more time tonight to start taking things apart and confirm what's happened.
Got a nice pile of parts coming my way now lol, Christmas came back again fast! |

Got around to taking things apart last night. The first video below shows the spray around the engine bay, and then the noise from the pump. The second video is the pump removed. The plastic impeller disk is still intact, it feels like a bearing or something within the pump is grinding. I'm not sure what caused the failure, maybe a seal or something? No idea, but I'm relieved to not find bits of plastic everywhere. Coolant drained from the block was clean. Water pump pulley is caked with shit. Belts are ok but replacing them anyway.
Ordered new water pump, gasket, bolts, thermostat, pulley, belts... Already had the coolant at least! new pump won't be here until the weekend I think Water pump pulley not looking so hot Last edited by yousefnjr; 02-01-2016 at 08:21 PM.. |

how difficult to DIY???
do you maintain with coolant changes. the brown liquid seems to suggest not?

DIY is fairly simple, using one of the many e46 guides. In brief:
-disconnect battery -remove fan shroud and fan -remove belts -drain coolant from radiator and block (plug behind vanos accumulator bracket...) -remove coolant hoses from t-stat housing -remove bracket and cable from top of t-stat housing (3x screws I think?) -remove t-stat housing and t-stat -remove water pump pulley (4x screws) -remove water pump (5x screws) Coolant is less than 2 years/20k old, most of it was clean and clear, just the stuff that was getting flung around was brown. Still not sure, but maybe it's mixing with rust and other gunk where it's leaking from? I don't know |

Forgot to post some follow up to this. Received the new parts and installed them right away. The new pump is much quieter than the one that I removed (video below). I also installed this sweet looking water pump pulley from ECS, looks like a tiny little wheel. Car is running tip-top now
Sorry for the lack of photos, had a few beers while this was going on |
