so for those who have this installed, did any of you have issues where the shifter was not centered? also seems like the install for the e46 m3 is pretty time consuming, but i think i read back in one of the pages that it's not as bad for our cars? if so whats the reason behind that - b/c we don't have to replace the selector rod?

The selector rod is not the hard part, it is the precision fit bushing in the carrier for the shifter. The E46 requires this because it only has a single leg to anchor it to the trans up front, the Z4M has two legs that utilize OE bushings which prevent movement well enough not to need the precision fit bushings I am guessing.

One of the design features of this SSK is that it is canted towards the driver more than the OE.

Kinda like a penis
It is naturally slanted to one side. Ask the father of creation why this is...God knows

Gotcha - so is this more of an annoyance or convenience?

It's to put the shifter closer to hand the way it should be.
Canted is more of a natural fit to your hand.

OE cops out by putting it in the middle.
Then they only have one part # for both left and right hand drive markets.

I'm a little confused, I don't really see a kink in either direction in the shift lever. Seems to be pretty centred for me. Although I have not driven the car yet, still sitting on my lift.

Even if the shift lever were kinked, why would it matter if the car were LHD or RHD, you could just rotate the lever 180 degrees, no?

It's not very pronounced.

...no it can't be flipped.
There are definitely 2 different kits.

Yes! It arrived Friday. Now I have to figure out when I'm going to dive in and get it installed.

haha I honestly wouldn't recommend this as a DIY unless you have someone available helping you. Someone who's already done SSK in BMW's before =P

There is no difference in the lever. I sent Ronald an email asking him about it, to ensure I got my lever in correctly, his response is copied below.

Quote:
No worries the only orientation on the Z3 Z4 levers as far as RHD is concerned is a knob rotation not a front back or left right orientation. Unlike all other BMW the Z3 Z4 have a straight lever . Now on some Z3 we have bent levers upon request in the past to position the knob closer to the driver. that has not come up with the Z4.
Hope this helps

Ronald

By the way, Ronald is EXTREMELY helpful and very prompt in answering emails. The included instructions are seriously lacking but his customer service and the quality of his product more than make up for it.

Ya, I don't get it either, maybe the slit on the top of the shift lever is a different angle on the RHD?

speaking of knobs, so is the general consensus that ZHP + AS SSK is too short? also, can any aftermarket knob work on this kit?
