might be time for a M coupe
Think I found a used Z4 M Coupe I want to go with... as long as the numbers the guy comes back with look good. Black on Imola with Carbon.
Anything I should be aware of when inspecting these cars? Subframe issues, etc?

just be aware that the resale on these cars is really low right now after all of the dealing they did these past 3 months.
Factor that in with your offer. I have no knowledge of the car mechanically ... good luck with that, I'm sure others here will chime in on that. |

Well, the sale price is low for him since he is getting it used so it won't be a low resale for him
1. I would say there are going to be rattles, deal with it. 2. The runflats are not that great (according to some) 3. Far as I know there is nothing wrong off the bat, just annoyances while driving.

He's looking at the M Coupe - no run-flats, thought the stock Continentals aren't well thought-of.
The other common complaint is that the gearbox can grind during shifts between first and second when shifting at over 7000rpm. The reasoning is that the gearbox is from the 3.0si rather than the E46 M3, so the synchros weren't engineered to deal with the high-revving S54 engine. Some users got a new, supposedly updated gearbox. Other users report the problem goes away after a while. Other than this, I can't think of any issues the Z4 has that others don't. Some people complain of the build quality, others (like myself) have no problems. The car is essentially an upgraded 2-seater E46 M3, and shouldn't have any issues the 2006 M3 owner won't have. Indeed, there might be fewer as 1) the Z4Ms are less complicated and 2) some bits were transferred over from the higher-spec CSL/CS packages, like the brakes and suspension components. |

Are the RFTs new on the 07s, as I am pretty sure I have them.

I thought RFTs were on all new BMW. I know I have them and I was pretty sure the M had them as well.
I don't have an updated flash player for bmwusa.com so I can't check right now.

Just to confirm: Z4M's do not come with RFTs.
That said, if I were looking at a used Z4M, I'd have the dealership verify that the car had never been over-revved (due to shifting into too low a gear - like going for 4th and finding 2nd). The on-board computer records such events and the dealership can take a look. I have seen a couple of unsuspecting buyers of used Z4s wind up with engine problems (damaged valvetrains - poor performance) surfacing many miles after an over-revving event. Moreover, dealerships have denied these repairs under warranty when they point to the abusive over-rev situation that caused it. Other than this issue and the aforementioned second gear synchro (does it grind when you shift to second gear after about 7k rpm in 1st gear?) -there are no frequently reported gripes/concerns to worry about that I'm aware of.

awesome; thanks for the help guys. The original owner was a middle-aged woman who's bf bought her the car, but she traded it for a 3er. I will have the dealer check the over-rev info though.
